OMG, this is the first I've heard of this. I had noticed the site seemed off lately, I just figured it was me being busy and less interested. But you're right most of the regulars haven't had an article in a while and there haven't been any new videos. Going to see if Google can tell me exactly what happened.

Update: The company says it's because the site was under-performing, but to me that sounds fishy. Because this move obviously won't bring in more revenue.

I scrolled through Daniel O'Brien's twitter feed, he was always my favorite. Freaking heart-breaking, some of it.

Online media is a garbage industry. Doing stuff like this is usually (IME) about cutting costs to the bone to increase profit margins, rather than about increasing revenue. Also, that basic playbook is a major theme in corporate America's relationship with labor, and is one of the major factors driving wealth and income inequality in America. Support unions.,

I didn't follow anything but the main articles, but suddenly seeing it just go... bland and generic with no familiar names anymore was more heartbreaking than I ever anticipated.

I was wondering if something happened! It’s seemed... off. No articles have looked eye catching for a while now.

Wait, is it all gone? Because I always loved watching After Hours and Obsessive Pop Culture Disorder on youtube, I'll be sad to see them go.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-24 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
It's not gone. The site and videos are still up, they're even adding new articles to the site. But all the regulars, the known names who made the best articles and videos, were let go in early December. So you can still see the old episodes of AH and OPCD, but there won't be any new ones because all those people are gone.

Oh, oh man. Okay.

That fucking blows, and I'm really sorry for everyone that lost their jobs, jesus.

Well damn, I was wondering why Cracked seemed so weird to me. I hadn't gone on that site in a while and when I did, there was something off about it and I couldn't figure out why there were so few comments. Damn shame.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-24 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
They stopped being funny ages ago when they went SJW. It was ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-24 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. It only stopped being funny for the people who think that other people NOT being misogynist dicks somehow ruins their good times.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-24 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Whaaaat. No. I had no idea.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-24 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you so much on this. I miss the old Cracked. And their facebook page is just reposts of 5-year-old articles. It makes me so sad.

I used to check Cracked daily up until maybe three or four months ago when I switched to checking it every week or two. There was a point where I read every article they posted, but they went downhill so much in the last year or two that I didn't see the need to look more than a few times a month.

Anyway, I was barely around at all for Nov-Dec-Jan and suddenly a few days ago I read somewhere else that the whole site imploded and all my favs are gone? It's pretty shocking that it happened so suddenly.

But I guess at the same time I kind of saw it coming. They went from a formula that had mass appeal (comedy, pop culture, and random interesting stuff, without being super clickbaity) to one with pretty limited appeal (politics, with recycled clickbait mixed in).

(Anonymous) 2018-01-24 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I still read their articles, but yeah, no where near as good as they used to be. I'm not sure if any of the old writers are still there.

Whaaat?

I stopped reading the site after they changed layouts and it became a layout mess. This is a shame.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-24 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
:(

that is sad, OP. I used to go on that site quite often, and articles by John Cheese, Daniel, and Sergeant (dreamy sarge, lol) as well as the others + after hours always cheered me up.

Any idea where they've gone?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-24 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dang... I used to be big into Cracked and had been going through my own depressive 'nothing interests me' downswing where I wasn't checking, so... like, man.

I could have written this secret in my sleep, if my depressive cycle was just a little different from what it is, instead I find out from fandomsecrets of all places...

I'm feeling you, OP.

Same. But I just checked now and I don't see any of my favorite names anywhere. =/

Had no idea either but not very surprised as heard they had problems with company owning them for quite a time. I am not certain if they are not associated with company owning Newsweek as they cleanse staff for same reasons (and I remember the companies connected somehow) which usually is ideological but masked with not making enough revenue (both always did thus yeah...).

Edit: Actually, I was unaware they got bought out second time in 2016. It is not a company I thought of nor do I know anything about the way they work but whole thing sounds fishy as fuck as they apparently claim they overpaid 35 million at the moment and site is not generating revenue. As far as I know they were having most profitable run as of yet just cocked up advertising recently (their app was unusable as it froze systems for example and website ads were not better so they did lose some income there).
