Random fandom annoyances

That you have with the people IN your fandoms, current trends, etc - not the source material itself.

Not necessarily anyone's fault but tumblr's for being difficult to sift through at times, but I'm getting a bit annoyed with how many aro/ace headcannons & moodboards I'm finding when what I'm actually looking for is porny (or at least, steamy pre-porn) content featuring a particular character.

Re: Random fandom annoyances

Ugh, same. I don't get the compulsion to take an attractive character and go "nope, no sex for them. They're too Pure and Good for that nonsense."

I mean, Tumblrites can do what they want, but it's just so weird compared to what fandom used to be like, when liking a character meant you wrote (or thought about writing) as much dirty hot porn as you could.

People on tumblr tagging some "If these characters were in this movie/game" with every tag from that movi/game they can find.

"(fandom name goes here) critical" posts, or even whole blogs for organizing long meta on everything that's problematic and badly written (and drawn, and acted, and...) with their fandom's canon. They're so tryhard intellectual. Work on your real school essays instead, kiddos.

Oh goodness, yes. It all tends to be a lot of nitpicking and mental masturbation with a side of poorly understood sociology, and comes across like they're trying to...win...something. The Argument About Whether or Not it's Correct to Like the Thing, I guess?

the posts themselves might not be well written, but I'm still glad that people are trying

Eh, I find them really annoying. (Particularly all the Cullen-critical shit in the DA fandom.) But at the same time I'm glad people are writing meta at all anymore. I'll take people writing angry meta rants about things they hate over forty thousand identical gifsets any day.

All this insistence on "soft" aesthetic. This might as well be any current fandom. I dunno, what if I like things hard?

Yes, this. So much.

I especially hate how much the femslash crowd promotes it, these days.

I'm literally never going to be someone's "smol, soft" girlfriend - because, well, I'm on the taller side and my weird life isn't particularly conductive to "softness" unless I'm just trying to get someone to like me, for survival's sake.

But thanks for insinuating I'm unwelcome, fandom.

I'm sorry

I feel the same. Being “soft” makes me uncomfortable. That’s not me trying to be edgy or anything, and it might be a legitimate problem, but it is how I am.

Saaaame. Especially since it's always the same generic "soft" bullshit things applied to every character and every circumstance. Pastel colored sweaters and tea and flavored lip balm and shit.

What does this mean? Just curious, I'm not on tumblr or whatever and not sure what you're referring to.

Oh anon. Ooooh anon.

I am currently most active in Star Wars fandom. I am deep, deep, deep in the dumpster fires of hell. My annoyances are not random; they are known, throughout the galaxy.

Biggest three:
-the idea that anyone who ships Reylo (which, for the record, I do not. It makes me very uncomfortable. However, I am huge on the principle of ship and let ship) is evil and...stupid, I suppose? There are so many posts that seem intended to educate shippers on why it's a bad ship, and I know that there are some people out there who are overlooking what are rather clear indicators of abuse, but... As there tends to be with all shipwank, there's this lack of differentiation between what shippers see/want and what's actually been presented in the canon (I've seen anti-TLJ people start their rants with "what Reylo shippers want," which is ridiculous, because what Reylo shippers want has no bearing on the actual narrative); a lack of understanding that portraying or wanting to explore a thing in fiction does not mean supporting it in real life; and an overabundance of attention paid to how other people are getting off. Instead of going on an ill-begotten crusade against people who are Doing Fandom Wrong™, why not generate some useful meta?

-the idea that Jyn is an ungrateful racist white feminist cunt who is utterly irredeemable due to her saying, "it's only a problem if you don't look up" and, "you might as well be a Stormtrooper." She says both of these lines, in anger, to men who have hurt and betrayed her, and the former directly contradicts her own experience (a girl who lands herself in an Imperial labor camp is quite obviously a girl who's looked up), and she goes on to sacrifice herself for the cause, but none of these things matter. She is on a level with Kylo Ren because she "disrespected" the men (one of whom killed an innocent, disabled ally because said ally was inconvenient [among others, the narrative intimates], and the other of whom had become a paranoid madman and who tortured the fandom cinnamon roll, but that's okay, because They're Devoted to the Cause, so they are Definitely Moral. Murder and torture: perfectly fine! Uttering controversial, angry words: unforgivable! I'm totally not bitter about this!). There are people who mock her for being upset after watching her father die, as if Good Moral Non-Racist People are able to rid themselves of personal feeling and attachment if it's "understandable" that a family member is killed. There's a very cold, calculating feel to a lot of the hatred of her that I've come across, and it's as distressing as it is irritating.

-the idea that everything about 'The Last Jedi' must be viewed through the lens of the characters' gender, race, and assumed sexual orientation. The total reduction of every single one of them to their gender, race, and assumed sexual orientation, so that Poe must be driven by sexism, and Leia and Holdo and Rose must be driven by racism, and Rey and Finn are shackled to heteronormativity, and the story is actually about Kylo now and Rey is an accessory to it because...I'm not even sure how this works, but it's definitely further evidence of sexism and racism. And the thing is that there are actually problems with the film. Big, huge, gaping problems, but instead of properly talking about them, a segment of fandom is using shortcuts derived from shitty sociology to reduce everything to identity markers. They think they're being progressive while hindering the ability of characters to be actual people.

I've mentioned it before but there's this thing in the One Piece fandom where everyone, whether they be tumblrites or dudebros on the wikia, is trying to predict what's going to happen next based on one single chapter.

Oda mentions at JumpFesta that the Wano arc will make Marineford look "cute" (his word) and suddenly everyone is an expert on who will die, who will attack who, and what other terrible tragedies will befall every single Straw Hat on Wano. We are probably still 3-4 months away from any chapters actually taking place on Wano to start the arc and yet "they just know."

One Piece being ongoing, it's extremely difficult to predict where it's going to go. If you told me at the beginning of the Dressrosa arc that Luffy would come out of it with a fleet of his own, I would have laughed. But every new chapter that comes out, suddenly tumblr and other blogs are pouring out about how X is going to be the next crewmate, how Y is going to kill Z, and how Luffy is going to learn how to do Q. Every single one of them has been wrong all along but they're still constantly trying to one-up each other, trying to be more right than other fans, and be the first one to say so. Drives me fucking nuts.

There's an author in the Man from U.N.C.L.E. fandom that writes everything that I hate - o.o.c, AUs, tooth-rotting fluff - and ordinarily, I'd just scroll passed stuff like that. BUT OMG SHE IS EVERYWHERE. She's just so damn prolific. One of my favourite archives has a "random story" feature and sometimes it'll be her stories a few times in a row before I get to something I can read. Occasionally, I'll start a fic, dislike it, get a sinking feeling, scroll back to check on the author and - yep! there she is as a 'collaborator' or the fic is 'inspired by' or 'for' her. I know it's stupid and petty and ridiculous (there are plenty of other people out there writing similar stuff in the fandom, and plenty of people who like what she writes, and she's perfectly entitled to write and post) but every time I see the screen name I get this irrational surge of "get off my lawn!" feeling.

... ... well, it is a random fandom annoyance.
... ... I have never, ever, otherwise wanted somebody to STOP liking things I like.

Oh man, there was a fic writer like this in my main fandom for several years. The only pairing she wrote fic for was my NoTP, and she wrote - I swear to god I just checked her AO3 and this is the actual number - 971 fics for this pairing. NINE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY ONE.

So as the fandom started to thin out, there was well over a year where all of the community fic round-ups would be, like, at least 50% her fics.

And I know - as you say - that she's totally entitled to write and post as much as she wants, and she undoubtedly made some people out there happy with her fic. But I still frequently wanted to yell "Jesus, can you give it a rest!?" at her.

I wish more people in my fandoms wrote fic that was at least vaguely set in the universe the show takes place in, instead of 1000 bloody AUs. I want to read fic about these shows for a reason, you know?

Re: Random fandom annoyances

(Anonymous) 2018-01-24 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, in my main fandom, so often AUs for my OTP are a way to ditch most or all of the fucked up backstory and replace legitimate obstacles like their incompatible moral codes with generic “I misunderstood something I overheard our neighbor saying” turned into a 100k fic about manufactured relationship drama, rather than “we both love each other but you see manipulation and murder as ways to protect your family and I see them as reasons not to trust you.”

The use of politics to justify endgame shipping. No johnlocke and destiel wouldn't be revolutionary.

Or just being overly concerned about what's going to be "endgame" for a show that might not even have a romantic endgame.

Re: Random fandom annoyances

(Anonymous) 2018-01-24 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I like both ships (and other ships involving those characters - multishipping ftw!) But I hate when people bring politics and causes into shipping. I like my ships because feels and hotness and intrigue about a dynamic and all that. It's not a bloody crusade.
