I've been in a number of musicals over the years, and I actually do agree with you, the acting is just as important (if not more so) than the singing. My church group is a very small performance group, so we occasionally have to have lead characters who can't quite sing--this year when we did Two from Galilee our Jacob/one of the three wise men couldn't sing terribly well, but my God, can he act. And the three people in the play everyone loved the best? He was one of them for his superior acting. (Okay, yes, the other two were the kid who played Joseph (a friend of mine who can SING) and the kid who played Mary (uh...me) because we can both act and sing well, but still.)

And I know plenty of people who not only think they could do better than a Tony Award-winning actress, but actually COULD do better. (As long as you're not talking about Angela Lansbury. NOBODY beats Angela Lansbury. )
