Non-religious Warding Item

(Anonymous) 2018-01-26 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
If you had to ward off an evil spirit or demon or whatever with a non-religious item you have strong faith in, what would yours be?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-26 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Sometimes the canon fulfills people's needs for X, so you don't see as much fic/art for X.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-26 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
An underwater world would be super cool.

Isn't Disney doing a live action Little Mermaid? That might scratch the itch for you, OP.

The puppets might be good for puppets, but they are very creepy looking and have a very uncanny fake appearance. It could be that society is less willing to suspend disbelief for something that is clearly a clunky puppet than they were back then though.

My cat.

I'm convinced that's what she actually does anyway when she suddenly starts hissing and spitting at nothing.

A LITTLE bit? That movie was a dumpster for. A gorgeous dumpster fire, but a dumpster fire nonetheless.

I think Black Crystal and Labyrinth hit the limits of what Jim and Brian could do without going all in on RC rigs with a half-dozen operators. (I'm more kindly disposed to Labyrinth from a performance art perspective.)

Accents

(Anonymous) 2018-01-26 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by yesterday's James Marsters secret, I have to ask the British of F!S, does Alexis Denisof nail his accent? It sure sounds like he does to me, but I'm American, so I can't really tell that well.

Discuss other accents in shows! We all hear about the bad ones, but are you a native of wherever and were amazed at how well someone nailed your region's accent?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-26 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It's the belief that works not any special faith. You believe in Jewish tradition, right? So you would follow what your faith says to get rid of a demon. The cross stuff works for Christians because they believe in it. Your faith is what's important. Atheists are screwed hehehe. j/k

(Anonymous) 2018-01-26 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, i was using a bit of understatement

honestly, though, for as stupid as the script and plot were, I think just recasting the male lead and getting rid of all of the Rihanna stuff would have improved it a ton even without changing anything else

Movie Club Poll!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2018-01-26 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Here is the Movie Club poll!

Voting will be on Thursday and Friday. I'll announce the winner on Monday and we will have until February 9th to watch.

Remainder that we are watching Into The Abyss (on Netflix, Youtube, and Amazon) this weekend!

I am also looking for suggestions for nomination themes for upcoming movies OR suggestions for the Movie Club in general.

Whenever any character has a German accent, I want to crawl under the couch out of second-hand embarrassment and cringiness.

Seek out "The Abyss", it's very memorable.

Movies rated PG-13 that should have been Rs or vice versa

Movies "based on a true story" that strayed as far away from the true story as possible

Neo-versions of old genres, like neo-noir, neo-westerns but NOT remakes or reboots

Movies made for the internet and not for theaters

I'm actually old enough to have seen it in the theaters as a really wee one.

It's dated by today's standards.

But at the time it was released, it was absolutely breath-taking on the big screen. There had literally been nothing like it before. It pushed the technical boundaries of puppetry forward in a very big step (if not a leap). Henson Company was touting it as a big technological break-through for them.

In all seriousness, if you can find any contemporaneous reviews on the or behind-the-scenes featurettes on the Web, you'll see that it was a big honking deal.

Plus, without the Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, you don't get Jim Henson's Creature Shop (which was specifically created to support the movies).

Without Creature Shop, you don't get Farscape.

So, yes, today Dark Crystal looks shabby, but it laid the groundwork for a shit-ton of what came after.

Now, get the hell out of my yard, yungun! /jk

Have we done movies that combine 2 different genres into one?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-26 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed that he looks good in it, but that was the only good thing about that movie.

I just watched Dr. Strange, and thought Benedict Cumberbatch sounded like a British person trying to do a stereotypical American accent and giving up halfway through lol
