I've heard good things about fantasy and sci-fi comics. (I've definitely seen some "unique" things when people post panels from Saga . . .)

You know, as much as I rag on George Lucas, hiring McQuarrie was one of his better moves. Unfortunately the Star Wars look and feel has been widely copied.

The current hotness seems to be teal and orange abuse, and transparent interfaces that wouldn't be remotely usable in practice except for HUD and AR applications.

I hope you enjoyed Valerian last year. I certainly did, for this exact reason.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-26 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
not OP but, while I did enjoy the visuals of Valerian, the plot and writing and acting did bring it down just a little a bit

A LITTLE bit? That movie was a dumpster for. A gorgeous dumpster fire, but a dumpster fire nonetheless.

yeah, i was using a bit of understatement

honestly, though, for as stupid as the script and plot were, I think just recasting the male lead and getting rid of all of the Rihanna stuff would have improved it a ton even without changing anything else

I just wanted it to be about the Pearls. I didn't care about Valerian and Lorawhatever at all. Their relationship might have been pivotal in the source comics, but they just weren't properly developed and their actors were shit.

ayrt

A little bit but I didn't think it was nearly as bad as most people seem to. I thought all the acting was fine for the kind of movie they were trying to make. I think it was maybe a little to true to the source material (campy graphic novel space opera) for american audiences...

I'm with you, OP. Just - more sci-fi and fantasy in general, and they do *not* all need to look like LoTR or Star */Blade Runner.

I liked 'The Expanse' a lot because of that reason - it was pretty unique looking in a lot of ways, and they did their best to stick to science as closely as possible. Very cool!

Ditto on The Expanse.

And if you haven't seen it, Jupiter Ascending is visually stunning, just amazing eye candy, and I really enjoyed the plot. It gets tanked a lot but I thought it was a ton of fun.

OH yes! It was *very* fun to watch. The story was a bit eh, but i enjoyed it visually, and i really like that actress, so some of the less awesome moments i could easily gloss over.
