I agree, OP. I love really dark fiction, but I hate how often the mentality of "there are no good people" seems to accompany dark fiction, or even just a lot of the more "adult" fiction that's out there. I tend to not watch a lot of HBO shows for that reason. The production values are often really high, but the majority of their shows seem to operate on the presumption that realism equals "Life is shit and people are shit and then you die, one way or another." And that's just not a worldview I can agree with or get invested in. I like complexity and flaws in my characters, but IMO when the entire cast exists somewhere below the "Are they basically a decent person?" bar, that's just lazy writing.

Agreed on every single word of this. I like stories that show how people can make their way through the dark times, and how they can lean on and support each other when things go to shit. I like having some hope and humor and good moments sprinkled into the mix.
