It was a shitty write up for sure, but did this publication force her to tell them her story? Did they get that cringey quote about the wine from her by gunpoint or something?

I mean, they certainly chose how to frame the story, chose what to use as pull quotes, how to write and present it, etc.

There's more than a few articles that go into the problems people have with the way the website presented it.

as someone who was interviewed for local news as a teenager

I made a lot of cringey self-deprecating jokes that I deeply regret that ALL got quoted with no trace of irony because I felt so put on the spot by the rapid interview style

the 'desperately trying to buy time and cut tension' that was definitely apparent in my voice definitely did not make it into print media

this woman wasn't a teenager but she might well have been talking to major league press for the first time, and if you aren't prepared to deal with someone whose actual job it is to get good sensational tidbits out of you, you're probably going to say at least a few things that you wouldn't have in another context

she's still responsible for the things she said, but I don't think it's fair to assume that they represent her best or even her ordinary self
