General tech question re: email

A friend and i used to write RP stuff via email. Currently, in a gmail account, we both have over 1000 emails of our back-and-forthing.

Does anyone know - short of tedious and slightly horrifying copy-paste - a way to dl all those emails? Or put them somewhere easier to access? I'd really like to organize them into the narrative they are, rather than them just sitting there.

Have you tried this? Does it just dl them into the Thunderbird client and they sit there in exactly the same format?
Or does it dl them as something else?
