But the secret vastly overstates how bad the decision is, specifically because it ignores the context and the reasons for making that decision.

MTE. What El went through was rough, and Hopper definitely wasn't the best at communicating with her and giving her as much information about what was going on as he could have. But under the circumstances, they didn't have a whole lot of feasible options.
