So, in Warhammer 40k, the Eldar, which are basically elves, got really, really into sex. Really perverted sex. They kept pushing the boundaries. And they managed to create a Chaos god. The Chaos god wants to eat the souls of all the Eldar. Most of them were destroyed. Some escaped. They split into two groups. One group tries to avoid said Chaos god by being really good and avoiding anything that might attract chaos. The other group, the dark eldar, didn't want to give up their sex. So they save their own souls by feeding other souls to the Chaos god. They torture, rape, and do various other horrifying things to their victims to feed the Chaos god.

In a universe where everything is horrible (and everything in Warhammer is horrifying), the Dark Eldar stand out. They are probably the way you least want to die.
