"But the secret vastly overstates how bad the decision is..."

Where does it do that? It references "Hopper's bad decision" once. The conditions described are pretty accurate, IIRC? Elle wasn't allowed to leave the cabin. She wasn't even supposed to look out the window. Due to Hopper having a job and all, he wasn't able to stay with her all the time, so she was alone. Not surprisingly, all of that and knowing that her friends believed she was dead contributed to her unhappiness. That doesn't sound like overstating the situation.

I agree that it is correct about how bad the situation was! But outlining the reasons why the situation is bad is not sufficient to evaluate Hooper's decision, without considering the reasons on the other side.
