And alternatively, the hate on gay ships because they ~fetishize~ gay people and so now it's actually more social-justice to ship het.

I've only really heard that one towards women. It's okay if you're a gay dude or nonbinary because it's reclaiming it or some bullshit.

Well, fandom spaces are female dominated so yeah, and it's usually m/m slash in question.

I can agree to some extent that slash fangirls can occasionally be gross and over the top, and it's obnoxious when they act like they are practically gay themselves or at least mega activists because they masturbate to gay pairings. And I can understand a gay dude not being comfortable with that, and obviously a gay dude really can't fetishize m/m pairings... or rather, they can, but that's the freaking point. But a little bit funny, in my opinion, to exclude "nonbinary" identified individuals from fetishizing gay people by shipping m/m.

It's not the slash itself that's the problem (unless tinhatting is involved), but there's a lot of real-world homophobia and biphobia that goes alongside slash and m/m romance fandoms. Shipping m/m doesn't make one's work immune from criticism by gay and bi men, doesn't absolve one of relationship homophobia and biphobia, and it doesn't make one the savior of m/m lit and entitled to throw a shitfit when LGBT literary awards prefer LGBT authors.

Absolutely.

But that doesn't make it inherently gross and unethical for a girl to like m/m pairings or a guy to like f/f pairings.

As a gay person - who has actually dated and had sex with people of my gender and faced some pretty nasty homophobia as a result - I'm absolutely aware that shipping gay ships doesn't mean you're not homophobic and doesn't mean you get to speak for gay people. Though I'm not clear what these "LGBT literary awards" are for. Are they to recognize gay, bi, and trans authors? Or are they to recognize stories focused on gay, bi, and trans plots? If it's the second, it shouldn't matter what the sexuality or gender identity of the author is.

The decision of the committee responsible for the awards was that the awards served both purposes: to promote LGBT authors and to promote LGBT content. And professional authors of m/m romance threw a fit arguing that they were god's gift to gay lit. It was a few years ago back on livejournal.

Meh. Sounds like an award I'd have no interest in putting my stuff in the running for, and doesn't really sound very professional either. I don't need to be recognized "because I'm gay". And while all my original work has m/m or f/f, none of it is about "LGBT issues" so whatever.

nayrt

What about seeing this from people who ship slash??? implying the gross cishets "need to stop" while of course every thought had by queer teenagers is perfectly unproblematic

Also annoying as fuck. People can ship whatever gender combination they want, and others need to get over it. And I'm gay, though a gay woman, so I simultaneously can and can't ship m/m without shame. :)
