LMA's messages were VERY puritanical, which is why I really didn't take to most of her books that I read. An Old-Fashioned Girl shames one of the main characters for *flirting,* of all things! There's this tirade about "not taking love seriously" and being shallow and it's just ridiculous. There's a lot of that shit in Little Women too--Meg is made to feel like she's a materialistic asshole for wanting nice clothes. when she is a member of a class that *requires* them, through no fault of her own (their dad lost all the money) has been suddenly denied the funds to wear them and cannot earn money on her own. Anything other than pious selflessness is seen as unworthy which is why I always kind of liked Amy. She was materialistic and owned it.

Agreed. I didn't notice as much when I was a kid. Those incidents just seemed weird and I didn't really understand why people were throwing a fit over such trivial things. As an adult, Alcott comes off as very preachy at times and her hang ups are a lot more conspicuous.

Louisa May Alcott was kind of plain to look at and didn't much care for fashion. Her hobbies included running and trying to get women to vote, and had no sexual interest in men. She received a lot of criticism from her peers about being unladylike. Honestly, I think some of this is just what "not like the other girls" looked like in the late 1800s.
