Would you want to be a BNF?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Conversely, have you ever been one?

I'd kinda like to. I want to get real good at drawing and it's always been a pipe dream of mine to work in the animation industry and unless you go to an art school, building up a big social media following is vital to get entry. It'd be cool for people I admire to acknowledge my work, but I wouldn't want to deal with people scrutinizing my every move or god forbidden place their expectations on me.

It's really depressing that talent alone isn't enough to get in. :(

I think I have been accidentally but only because I used to be one of the most active people in certain fandoms in terms of producing fanwork and organizing communities and events.

I wouldn't do it again because I don't have that level of time and energy to devote to fandom any more.

Only in that I would like to be able to write well and have lots of people enjoy those stories. I wouldn't want to be a BNF in any other respect.

This!

I had a friend who wasn't a BNF in larger circles, but was definitely a BNF on fanfiction.net. However, a lot of people thought her fics were pretty bad and that her OC was a Mary Sue, and she got a lot of nasty reviews; she also got featured on a few popular spork communities. So I'm glad I wasn't a BNF, because I know from her how much bad shit you can get thrown at you.

(I mean, sure, her fics weren't... great, but she was hurt by how harsh some people were, and would've been humiliated if she knew how infamous she was in the spork world.)

Ah that's horrible. :(

Honestly sporking communities are at least 50-75% glorified bullying circlejerks disguised as 'concrit communities'. I fail to see much point to them other than to humiliate people into writing what/ how you prefer. They're not as clever or funny as they think they are either

something I wrote showed up on WTF fanfiction. I don't think it was anywhere near as bad as what usually shows up there but I wasn't offended, I just thought it was funny.

No. The drama seems too daunting.

I wouldn't even want to be a popular original fiction writer - unless I could manage to steer clear of the entire internet, forever.

Heh, this. I just want to write stories, be they fanfic or original, that people hopefully enjoy. And I know it's very tough for writers to achieve this, but any original stories I wrote, I'd like to be successful enough to where I could make an okay living for myself from those, too.

But that's it. I don't need the popularity or fame aspects at all. Too much pressure.

I don't think I've ever been, even when there was more traffic at LJ, I was an active member of more communities and I had more friends. I don't want to be either... but I still do wish my fics were more popular and got more comments. I have terribly low self esteem and the only thing I take pride in life is my writing. I know it's pathetic, and it doesn't help.

My fic has been well received, but I don't get combative anons or rude comments. So I feel like I'm in a sweet spot, and that's exactly where I wanna be.

Absolutely not. Just the thought of people starting to get all entitled and bugging you about content all the time because hey, you're a BNF, you OWE us more content! is enough to kill my creativity.

I kinda-sorta was one, for a while, in the Buffy fandom (i was super active not only writing but reading, commenting, and participating).
I never had an drama issues or problems, just had a lot of fun.

Don't think i'll ever attain that again, but it was a trip.

I tried to. I wrote 70 Mad Men fics, and it honestly didn't get me any extra reviews or followers or asks or anything. I enjoyed writing the fics though! But besides making original posts Tumblr and posting fic to AO3, I'm not sure what else you're supposed to do to become a BNF...

I am pretty sure I was a BNF once in an anime fandom that enjoyed a few years of hyper popularity, at least among LJ/FF.N circles. That is, I was told I was a BNF (which is how I ever first heard the acronym, lol). I guess I unlocked this achievement by writing loads of slashfic for the most popular ship, and also I was super active on the LJ comms because I was ridiculously obsessed with the series in question, so engaged in and instigated a lot of series discussion. My fics would get hundreds of reviews, even the one-shots, so that was pretty cool. I even still occasionally get reviews from them even years later, which is always a bit nostalgic. I ended up making pretty good LJ friends with several of the other people who were really active in discussions/wrote a ton of fic, so that was fun.

I can't say I was ever really involved in any drama. I think there was a time or two when someone random would get aggressive toward me, but nothing too crazy. I don't think I'll ever be a BNF again because I don't have tumblr and don't have the time to write much fic, and I don't think I have it in me to get quite as obsessed about a series anymore. But the experience did give me more confidence in my writing, so inspired me to start writing original stuff.

No and no again.

Re: Would you want to be a BNF?

I sort of used to be one, just because I wrote a lot of fic on a kink meme (and would post them later unanon) and people could pretty much call me out on my writing style. But fortunately I never got into the drama with being a BNF.

Fandom size-wise, I wouldn't mind being a big fish in like a medium pond, but a big fish in a big pond? No. I'm glad that will never happen, lol.

Waaaay back in the day I was a BNF in a pretty small fandom. I wouldn't want to be a BNF in a big wanky fandom.

I was, back in the day. It wasn't the hugest of communities and most people were nice anyway. The community was already on a wind down when I fell out with one of the other BNFs (not my fault - their massive overreaction) and I just left.
