Well...lets use his laptop to look up the scripts. I shotgun Willow, Giles, and Drusilla

Writing is autobiographic by default. You’re putting your own ideas in paper, you’re writing your own beliefs. Film is specially tricky. Gender within narrative is a vastly overrated and broad and fuzzy concept.

What exactly is a gender? Is it the more or less arbitrary thread that binds the key events/emotionally intense moments of the movie together? In that case you might as well substitute it with something else (within reason).

Binding the elements of a fictional work together (characters, situations, environments) with a gender is just a mnemonic technique. Not something of vital importance. It's just an aid to focus the brain on the real important stuff in the work, and for it to be able to recall it later.

Are we starting with season three?

Nope, but you can pretend to be a Prague-ian mob and nearly kill me if you want!

Bees are also mostly (sterile) females with only a few males. Depending on species, the males may do some minor tasks around the hive, but their primary function is to help produce the next generation. If you see a bee or an ant outside the colony and it's doing something other than participating in a mating flight, odds are it's a female.

I never found the appeal behind Mikimoto's design myself, they're very stiff and don't translate finely to animation. On old-school shows I tend to appreciate the more expressive approach of Osamu Dezaki’s productions or Miyazaki’s Future Boy Conan.

[identity profile] jewbacca1897.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, just hit me a lot then.

Thank god these comments are nested, people would look very oddly on this conversation...if it wasn't in fandom_seceret! My bad, play on.

I have to second about EVE in WALL-E. EVE kicked some major butt!

Hah, no it's fine. Boredom creates odd things.

Okay, a little on the face.

Re: 129,

[identity profile] darsynia.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I always knew I went to a shitty school, but that really takes the cake. Talking it over with my husband, he pointed out that most Disney heroes are heroines, so maybe Pixar was just overcompensating... heh.

I won't feel bad about it (not that I am saying you expect me to, but I'm the type who would) because it's not like there's any motivation to go around checking facts you think are correct, you know?

[identity profile] wishing-wounds.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just trying to make it look good.

Word. His character designs are just average to me, but I don't mind them. I'd be perfectly content it he stuck to character design. It's everything else that bothers me.

I think that's basically what's called institutionalized sexism, in that it's not so much that the person doing it is overtly sexist, but they're responding to the norms of society, which in this case is "heroes are male, love interests/helpers are female".
I tend to think part of the reason this is coming up now is because Wall-E is about robots-- did they really NEED to sexualize (okay, genderize) robots? I mean, why did Pixar feel that need in the first place?

120. I didn't read the text first at all because I was so distracted by the fact that the picture looked like Saffron from Firefly. Then I realized that I was mentally combining this (http://still-flying.net/images/ourmrsreynolds/index.php?image=ourmrsreynolds051.jpg) with this (http://still-flying.net/images/ourmrsreynolds/index.php?image=ourmrsreynolds029.jpg).

Yeah... seriously. I tried Twilight and I couldn't stand it, I'm not reading the rest of them because of it xD

I'm like this with the Grudge Girl. I can't watch the movie ever again or the sequel and I was scared of it for a few years. It's kinda pathetic, but at least you're not alone?
