i read somewhere that they usually pick male protagonists because girls and boys can relate to a male, while boys probably wouldn't give much of a shit about a female as the lead

That really makes no sense since there are plenty of Disney movies with a female lead. Both boys and girls grew up watching things like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, the The Aristocats, Lady and the Tramp, Alice in Wonderland, etc.

What universe do you live in? The only Disney movie all the guys I grew up with and all the guys I've met since watched was Aladdin, which has a male lead. "Princess movies are for girls" is something I was told as an adult woman by a supposedly adult male.

No, what universe do you live in? I'm probably younger than you are, but all the males I know watched and enjoyed Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and Pocahontas when they were younger.

There's just something fucking wrong if a male refuses to relate with a character based on sex/gender, marketing strategies or no. And that's a problem that badly needs to be addressed.

Isn't that the whole point of what's wrong with society's views on media? It's assumed that men are universally acceptable and women are a niche market. That has been proven to be bullshit over and over and over again, but the movie/tv makers keep saying it and we keep accepting it. Fuck them. Boys (and girls) will continue to assume that girls can't be the heroes until we SHOW them that's not true.
