I wonder if it's just unconscious for directors and stuff to make the lead a male. Like, before it was because of sexism, but now it's just habit? Haha, that's what I think it probably is.

Re: 129

(Anonymous) 2008-07-07 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's just all random. I'm working on an original novel, most all of the leads are guys. That's just how it turned out. *shrug*

It's just however the script writer images it....and that's just how it ends up.

Re: 129

[identity profile] coloa.livejournal.com 2008-07-07 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
For the sake of argument:

You're writing one original novel. Pixar has made a lot of movies. None of which have had female leads. 0/1 is kind of different from like 0/14832497239. oAo

But yeah I see your point. When I count up my OCs and such, most of the main characters are male.

Re: 129

(Anonymous) 2008-07-07 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It just happens. o_O It's just however the story's flow forms.

Different anon.

(Anonymous) 2008-07-07 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably. I know in my major original novel (and my smaller fiction stories), they usually have the females as the lead and the males are love interests.

Though... of course, it's different when I write slash/yaoi/wtfever the word for original yaoi.

Are you a girl? I wonder if it's just that most of Pixar's writers are male, so they write about males, whereas women tend to write about girls?

Re: Different anon.

(Anonymous) 2008-07-07 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, yep. I has a vagoo.

Besides, we gotta write what we know!

Re: Different anon.

[identity profile] coloa.livejournal.com 2008-07-07 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! Buuuuuut on the otherhand, I'm sure there are plenty of female pixar writers. So. lol idk. I don't mind it, but I understand why other people get angry.

Re: Different anon.

(Anonymous) 2008-07-07 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I guess with males, they tend to have a set goal while we womiins tend to be all over the place.

... I mean that in the best possible way, femmists. CALM DOWN AND EAT A SANDWICH. D:

Weird. They should accept it. Do you have a Paypal account?

Re: -de anons-

I do, but Paypal never sends me the transactions to verify my bank account, so I can't... Use it. :

I flipped a coin for one roleplay application I was writing a while back. It came up tails, therefore the character was male. Gravity is sexist? *shot*

Re: 129

(Anonymous) 2008-07-08 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
That habit IS sexism. How do you think sexism reproduces itself? People fall into habits and mindsets that perpetuate sexism.

Re: 129

[identity profile] lol-no.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think if you're not consciously thinking of it in a sexist way, it's not sexism? Like, it's still bad, and I totally know what you mean, but I also think that like, um. Like going "Oh I am making a character and they are a male like always" is not as bad as "Oh I am making a character and they are a male because females are weak and stupid."

Um! But I'm not trying to argue; just share my thoughts. I know what you mean and basically agree? I just don't much care about things like that, so my argument for either side is half-hearted.

Also this is [livejournal.com profile] coloa but I am too lazy to switch back into that account.

Re: 129

[identity profile] dwinghy.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's basically what's called institutionalized sexism, in that it's not so much that the person doing it is overtly sexist, but they're responding to the norms of society, which in this case is "heroes are male, love interests/helpers are female".
I tend to think part of the reason this is coming up now is because Wall-E is about robots-- did they really NEED to sexualize (okay, genderize) robots? I mean, why did Pixar feel that need in the first place?

Re: 129

[identity profile] dwinghy.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Also I just realized how unintentionally apt my default icon is.

Re: 129

(Anonymous) 2008-07-08 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It's still because of sexism, dear. It's not like sexism and gender stereotyping magically went the way of the Dodo after the 1950s.
