Because if anything was proof of institutionalized sexism in our society, that'd be it right there.

I NEVER SAID INSTITUTIONALIZED SEXISM DID NOT EXIST IN OUR SOCIETY. THAT WAS MY POINT. THAT IT DOES.

I have a minor in Women's Studies, I took several classes dealing with this sort of thing. I'm just stating the reality of the situation and trying to explain why companies feel they have to market their shit the way that they do.

But you're making it sound like girls, on average, receive less toys than boys do, which I kinda doubt. But again, if you could point me to a source for that stat, I'd be very interested in reading it!

Girls receive less toys that are spinoffs of movies, because toys from things that are licensed tend to be geared towards boys. The only exception to this rule I can think of is that sometimes when there is a movie with cute animals in it, there will be a few stuffed animals from the movie (like Finding Nemo) that parents buy for girls.

Stuff like Barbie and Bratz -- the toys are manufactured first and then a tv show or cartoon or whatever is made to sell the toys.

Just walk into a Toys R Us or any place that sells toys and look in the action toy aisles. Everything you see is usually merchandise spun off of a movie or tv show. Not so much with the "girl" toys.

But that sort of reads like toys are marketed to boys because boys buy more toys because toys are marketed to boys, doesn't it?

Like I said EARLIER, parents condition their children to want a certain type of toy by the way that they raise them. Gendered play, blah blah...

Maybe so, but that still doesn't mean that 'boys get more toys' is a valid statement. Not all toys are made as movie spinoffs, and generally items like Barbie or whatever out-sell movie merchandise anyway.

Re: 129

Barbie movies are made after the toys come out as a way of just boosting sales. They aren't spinoffs of a movie like Pixar movie toys are. I didn't say that boys get more toys (earlier I mentioned "girl toys" aisles at Toys R Us), I said that the toys that are movie spinoffs are usually for boys because companies think that parents will buy those type of toys for boys as opposed to girls.

I seriously think people aren't actually reading anything I'm writing.

Or rather, I should have clarified that I was referring to the types of toys that #129 OP specified, but I guess I just assumed that's what we were talking about

Re: 129

It makes more sense now that you've clarified. The line I quoted in my first comment to you wasn't specific enough, since secret 129 doesn't actually mention toys or merchandising.
