Have you ever known anyone IRL in that kind of situation who so patently tries to move their hands in a way that palms and fingers make only sporadic or no contact with the other person? 'Cause that's what this is - look at how Chyler's awkwardly moving one hand off of Chris to kind of half wave it in the air while they embrace and kiss.

She was painting. Her hands have paint on them (maybe not literally, but per the scene, that's the set up). She also has a paintbrush in the other hand and she's trying not to touch him with it.

Besides which it's a comedy spoof of 80's teen movies. A lot of it's intentionally pretty awkward.

The scene is from the end of the movie when she wasn't painting. Also if you watch the entire scene you see she has her hands on him and then kinda goes like "ecch, not anymore".

It is because they are filming a fucking movie. DO YOU NOT KNOW HOW MOVIES WORK? have you never noticed that soldiers almost never wear helmets? Do you know why? SO PEOPLE CAN SEE THEIR FACES!

For some reason this particular storytelling mechanic tends to alter my willing suspension of disbelief more than the helmet thing, so maybe you could kinda tone it down a little there.
