WAS THERE DRAMA?
Oh, so much. So so so much. It's even more entertaining than the final product.
It was basically a fight between Trank (the director) and 20th Century Fox from the get go, with Trank fighting various people on set - when he bothered to show up - and destroying the rental home he stayed in during filming.
He even tweeted out that he made a great movie, "but you'll probably never get to see it" the day before the movie opened.
I can't attest to this bit (honestly most of this is from various articles written during the time) bc I don't quite remember, but apparently it was one of the few 20CF movies to have that flashy Marvel logo in front of the trailers and opening - probably trying to fool people.
Critics saw it in the eleventh hour before it opened - literally, the eleventh hour. Like, four hours before. Even the cast hadn't seen it. Hell, some of them still haven't as of like 2016.
Fox already had a sequel date set for this in mid 2017....that didn't happen, although it did make it's budget back worldwide, between reshoots and advertising.....yeah, it probably fucked Fox over big time.
It's widely considered that Trank's actions with this movie cost him a Star Wars anthology with Lucasfilm. Which is a shame, because I love Chronicle, but.....I mean he kind of had it coming.

Studios hinge so much on superheroes giving them so much bank to the point where most of them are manufactured and same-y.....this is at least .... different.
