"Do you wish people who eat cats horrifically experimented on and murdered by psychotic government agents, too?"

Yes.

Then congrats, you're an awful human being. I wonder how you'd feel if someone thought the same of you because you eat pig and pigs are sacred to their culture or something.

You're an awful human being if you eat cats.

NAYRT, I’ve been a cat lover my whole life, a vegetarian for 24 years, and my cat is headbutting me and purring as I type... why? What makes cats sacrosanct? A person who thinks of cats only as pets eating one when they weren’t at risk of starvation would be shitty, especially if they were cruel to the cat while they raised it or slow or cruel when they killed it. If, say, their best friend in the world was a donkey and cats were just another source of animal protein to them, they’d be way more of a bastard if they ate a donkey. Maybe the fishman’s best buddy was an Amazon dolphin and it had never seen a domestic cat.

I had a pet rat and I would be devastated is a cat killed her, so fuck cats and everyone who loves those murder machines. I cheered when the fishman ate it.

Have fun with your Black Death spreading vermin,

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, because pets are sold with fleas carrying life-threatening diseases all the times nowadays.

As opposed to leptospirosis, the hantavirus, or the seoul virus?

Utter nonsense. Cats probably taste horrid [this is true of carnivores usually, apparently], so you have shit taste if you eat them, is all.

AYRT—what about people who eat rabbits or guinea pigs or horses or dogs? I find eating any mammal or bird horrifying and even feel sad for reptiles and amphibians, but which animals are pets and which are food really is a cultural thing. My poor dead dogs and chickens each got wrapped in fabric and buried with favorite treats and sprinkled with flowers, with more flowers planted on top.

As a kid I snuggled my first cat who’d come back from a month’s disappearance half dead from infection, despite his truly horrific smell and appearance, and cried for weeks when my parents had to put him down.

But someone somewhere probably loves their pet monkey or parrot or whatever but is desperately glad to find a cat cheap at the market because it’s that or starve. Humans aren’t born with an instinctive knowledge of what animals are cuddly and which are dinner. Pigs are smarter than cats, but plenty of cat owners eat pork. Cats are no more, and certainly no less, worthy of human stewardship, friendship, or protection than any other animal.

I’m always weirded out by the compartmentalization that must be necessary for people who eat meat to not flip out at eating dead animals, but especially when they have such arbitrary rules for which ones are worthy of protection. I love cats. I get sick to my stomach thinking of one being harmed. But for me that’s also true of horses, bearded dragons, pangolins, chickens, dolphins, goats, elephants, humans... ants can fuck right off colonizing and killing my potted plants, though.

Exactly. I love animals, spent years volunteering at a wildlife rehab center, have stayed up all night nursing sick/injured/orphaned animals, and yet I still happily eat meat. I've rescued baby ducklings and I LOVE duck. Eating it doesn't bother me one bit.

I agree that I've always found it kind of weird how people can be 100% okay with eating some kinds of animals yet recoil in horror at the thought of eating others. Animals are animals. A cat is not somehow any more wonderful or valuable than a cow or a pig or a chicken. We just attach more value to cats because we keep them as pets, but like you said, that's entirely a cultural thing.

Yeah, I agree, it's definitely a cultural thing. Rabbits and horses are delicious, and eating them is normal where I live.
