If they eat bacon maybe they need to grow up.

Doesn't matter. They're still allowed to be disturbed by the death of a cat. Like it or not, most people (in Western culture, at least) don't eat cats. Whether it's right or not, people tend to view cats as pets, even family members. Not to say that pigs can't be kept as pets, but most people view them as animals to be used for food. Whether that's OK or not is a whole different discussion. To be fair, most people probably don't want to think about where their meat comes from. If they actually saw an animal being butchered, I wonder if it would change their eating habits.

Today's level of disconnect with where meat comes from has only existed for, at most, a hundred years or so. More like 60 years for anyone outside of a major city. I'm pretty sure most of humanity is still able to cope.

Agreed, unless you're vegan or have a ptsd trigger concerning animal death, I think it's pretty stupid all the people in the comments who are refusing to see the film because a cat dies. Animals die in way more cruel ways for all your hamburgers and steaks that you don't even need to eat to survive.

Why should they go see a movie if they know that it's going to upset them? You don't need to be vegan in order to be upset by animal deaths in movies. Plenty of people who eat meat have beloved pets.
