I remember the strong, intense feelings of childhood towards her family members, how she felt much closer to her father and that her mom was harsh or didn't like her, and that her mother preferred her sister. I remember much feeling the same about my mom, and the uneasy guilt of preferring the fun, sympathetic parent to the harsh, unreasonable one as a child.

The mother seems often portrayed as saintly and grim, but harsh as well IMO...with the puritan strictures around fun things and pretty intense Sabbath rules.

Another book I remember strong, troubled feelings about, Caddie Woodlawn and being able to do outdoors things, before having to "grow up and be a woman." It really troubled me, the harsh strictures of womanhood she was supposed to grow into. No more nature or freedom...

I remember having a lot of sympathy for Laura and her feelings about Mary being too perfect and favored by adults, which is weird because I don't have a sister and my younger brother was never the golden child (he turned out just fine, btw).

Same! Though my younger brother was the golden child AND had blond hair and blue eyes like Mary!

It's funny, though, because in...Little Town on the Prairie? She confesses this to Mary, and Mary is like 'you're so right, i really was just trying to show off and be perfect and do it on purpose to make you mad'.

I loved that confession as a kid, and also that Laura instantly and vehemently and totally sincerely denied it, and refused to see Mary that way at all.

Yeah, it seemed like they were both growing up so nicely! 😃

Bet you were happy when that snobby little b got blinded by scarlet fever, eh? Not so perfect now, ARE we Mary? Hard to be the cabin's It Girl when you're tripping over buckets and old ropes! Then let's not forget the chapter where Laura fed baby Carrie to a bear...
