117 n00b Who fan is n00b (ME, not you, heh), but I can't imagine loving anyone as much as nine, right now. I'm not terribly far into the series yet, but DAMN. I really, really like him. And I didn't expect to, considering the only other thing I've seen Eccleston in was Elizabeth...

119 Well, people do keep saying it's a kid's show...

Actually, aren't protagonists SUPPOSED to be cool and have neat toys and nifty adventures? I mean, I think the term Mary Sue/Gary Stu gets thrown around much too easily these days. I'm new to the fandom, so I can't say I know everything about the character, but it's hard not to generalize a secret when there are tons of people mis-using that term all over the interwebs.

123 Word. I have a fucking STORYBOOK marriage and it's still not that fabulous. Christ.

134 OHNOEZ A DECADE WHAT SHALL WE DO, CALL THE POLICE.

Okay, I know, seriously, that's a squick for you, and I really do respect that. There are plenty of reasons to find that distasteful. It's just that my parents were 18 years apart and had one of the most amazing marriages I've ever had the pleasure to witness and benefit from, so secrets like this always make me shake my head and lol.

I actually find older men attractive and am surprised and kind of excited to have fallen for someone only a year older than me--why excited? I expected to marry someone at least ten years older, which means the likelihood I'd have lived longer than them was higher. Now, I don't have to worry about that as much, barring accidents.

137 DO NOT WANT.

140 Nope, not alone. [livejournal.com profile] its_a_fake.

141 Gonna disagree with you on that one. Raise your hand, anyone who is surprised at my reaction? Right, then.

ps. The premiere for season 5 was AWESOME.

144 LOLFAKEWRAITH

162 So. Much. Word.

It's Farscape, and TheirLoveIsSoEpic. John Crichton and Aeryn Sun (played by Ben Browder and Claudia Black). On youtube if you search for' John/Aeryn moments' there's a list of the best moments (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=john%2Faeryn+moments&search_type=&aq=f) of the two of them. The first few are VERY spoilery for the last moments of the show, however, but this one I think captures a lot about their relationship without spoiling anything at all.

((Oversimplified explanation of what's going on--the little bottle is a 'kiss test,' used to determine whether two individuals are close enough in genetics to procreate (BIIIG universe, lotsa races, Farscape). Edit: if the kiss is bitter, they can't, if it's sweet, they can. Sorry for inbox spam!))

Thanks! Anything sci-fi makes me want to die, though, it's really not my thing. Ben Browder is however a cutie.

Ah, no luck then! Oh well! Yeah, he's definitely cute, and underused like woah in Stargate, imo...

Agreed. I love the darker and more serious feel that the series has taken.

119. Well, I thinkt eh problem isn't an overgeneralization, but a misinterpretation and a flawed value judgement. A Sue/Stu is an idealized self-insert. It's someone taking themselves and putting them in a story, only changing it so they're really awesome or dramatic or something. But Sue has become shorthand for any idealized cahracter who is more awesome than the average person and doesn't have some kind of ginormous flaw for it (or sometimes, evne those who do). True sues--self-inserts that serve no function except to gratify the writer or reader, are bad. They often have the features of other stuff that gets called a sue, and those can be bad, but they can also be good. I mean, for crying out loud, fucking Gilgamesh is a Sue by many people's contemporary definition.

The thing here is that the Doctor used to be a bit of a self-insert, but he isn't anymore. Now the companions seem to be the main point of self-insert; the Doctor is portrayed as foreign and alien and morally twisted. Would you call Cthulu a sue? Also, in terms of Mary Sues, the doctor carries himself like one, but ever since at least 4 or so we've seen what a dick he can be when he's not paying attention. The real sue in the new series, though, is Rose Tyler. She's obviously RTD self-insert. I mean, the Doctor has some Sue moments, and she has some moments that are brilliant, but if you think about the series she becomes a little distracting... especially with that ending of Journey's end, holy crap.

The human race has always had stories of strange, non-human or above human, but still anthropomorphic, beings who intervene on humanity's behalf. Doctor Who is and has always been a myth story. Which isn't for everyone, but don't go calling the Doctor a Sue unless you're going to call Gilgamesh, Hercules, and Jesus the same, am i rite?

YES. THAT. *points*

That's what I meant.

OHNOEZ A DECADE WHAT SHALL WE DO, CALL THE POLICE.

THIS.

My first relationship had a 17-year age difference (I met him at 17, he was 34 - we hooked up after my 18th birthday though, so NO ONE could put up a fuss), and things like this make my eyes ROLL AUDIBLY. The only serious issue age caused for us was the shitstorm it kicked up among friends who couldn't simply be pleased for us.

If someone can't imagine being in a relationship with a large age difference, that's fine. But people need to STOP trying to impose their squick on the rest of the world. (The, "divide by two and add 7," rule FTL.)
