What if I dislike her and the finale for being like badfic? Is that allowed?

Honestly, my main problem with her is that she wasn't developed. It was "Hi, here's River Song. Love her." without actually giving any REASON to like or care about her beyond "The Doctor likes her. I mean. Not yet. But he WILL. And you don't want to dislike someone the Doctor likes, right?"

I dunno - she seems likeable from the start, with brains and common sense plus humour.

I wonder if younger fangirls have trouble identifying with her? I don't mean for a moment "omg they're so immature" or anything like that - I just mean that maybe for fans not as ancient and decrepit as myself, she might seem confusingly more like yer auntie than a feasible love interest. Speaking very generally, perhaps for youngsters, "old married couple" doesn't hit the romance buttons. :-)

Well, I'm a 23 year old man, and she was very obviously a (future? past? lol timey-wimey) love interest, which I have no issues with (The only Doctor/Companion I ship is Three/Liz, so the age thing is definitely not an issue). I just thought she was a poorly written love interest with no chemistry with her partner. Which I do have issues with.

That was my personal thought. I loved her, absolutely. I don't get the charges of "no chemistry" either--I must not have been watching the same show. Of course, I've always thought that Tennant has more chemistry with the "older" women--Donna, of course, as well as Sarah Jane and Jackie, too. I wonder if that's a reason why some of the younger girls DO love Donna, though--she's not interested in the Doctor romantically, so she's not a "threat."

I don't know, I'm certainly an older fan and I really didn't care for her at all. It has nothing to do with the 'OMG he's Rose's man' cries, I just didn't care for her. She didn't interest me, I found her rather annoying personally and their chemistry to me seemed more like brother and sister than potential lovers. *shrug* Different strokes and all, I suppose.

Indeed. I don't want to overgeneralise or concoct a pat explanation, I'm just pondering out loud.

(I'll be forty next month, I'm feeling very gnarled, surrounded by all these young things. :-)

Oh, sure. I DO respect your opinion, honestly, and especially the respectful way you expressed it. I was kind of snarky there, myself, and I shouldn't have been. I just have problems with people who just HATE her because "OMG, the Doctor supposedly loves her in the future and that just can't be!" You are quite right that she wasn't exactly developed, but I actually liked that. I enjoyed the very timey-wimey aspect of the whole thing, and she just appealed to me as a character, on her own. I liked not knowing anything about her--I liked seeing the Doctor's frustration and sort of wondering what the hell was going on. She showed over the course of the two episodes, rather than having to tell us, that she loved him and was willing to sacrifice herself for him, as many others have done. Though I do wonder why, and the circumstances of how they met, I don't exactly need to know that. Enough was shown to me and I know enough of the Doctor's history to believe that he could have that effect on someone. Though if they want to bring her back, and considering that Steven Moffat is taking over that isn't too far-fetched a possibility, I won't be upset.

I also thought she was quite a bit like Jack, really, especially because it was set in the 51st century. I've always quite liked Alex Kingston, as well, and I thought she played the part wonderfully. I think Tennant had good chemistry with her, too. I am always attracted to strong, independent female characters, and if they're slightly "older", as well, that's even more of a bonus. Not incidentally, I adore Sarah Jane and Donna.
