I borrowed the secret as a springboard to a wider issue, but thinking about it, nitpicks are just as worthless in the context of the secret - if not more so, since they masquerade as useful feedback, and they're not.

I'm dead serious, it's not just the annoying grammar fascist thing. Writers, especially beginners, get hung up on tiny details like paper size and whether to use z-spellings, while neglecting much more important issues like whether their narrative starts in the right place or whether their characters make any difference by being in the story, etc. Now that's worthwhile feedback.

You do make very valid points, especially on the bit about narration positioning and the characters, but I think to be a truly great writer, you have to be able to do well on the little things, too.

I also think that while these nitpicks aren't always a good thing in the context of fandom, they can help a writer learn how to put a sentence together properly, and that's extremely useful in the business world. I realize that a great majority of fan fic writers are high-schoolers and probably look at the nitpick-y reviews and ignore them. However, if a small portion of them takes that information away and uses it outside of fan fiction, then it was advice well given.

Interesting point there. Although let us hope that teh Intarwebs are not the only source of information on spelling etc for the young 'uns. :-)
