Do you think that has anything to do with the climate and perception of people working with Allen (which obvs isn't that much of a big deal, it seems, but I saw more blowback against Winslet than I've seen for anyone working with him in years), or was it just that she wasn't great in the film?

Personally, I think it's a combination of factors.

* The tide of public opinion is turning, what with the Weinstein scandal. It's kind of awful that it takes a critical mass of negative feelings building up before people sit up and take notice and go, "Oh wait, yeah! Sexual abuse allegations ARE bad and they SHOULD stop!" but there you go.

* Woody Allen's children have been more vocal in recent times about what exactly went on, and that makes a huge difference.

* Most people don't give a shit about Woody Allen films, so they don't necessarily see it from the actor's POV which is wanting badly to work with a famous, critically lauded director. I'm not saying they're wrong, mind you. I'm just saying it's easier for people to say nobody should ever work with Allen or see his films than it is for them to say that of a director with more mainstream popularity.
