The "only through season 5" dog whistle for Supernatural. It's a normal thing to say, because if you don't like the show past season 5, why would you rec or talk about the later seasons. On the other hand, WE GET IT. You think it's bad now and you have so much more taste than everyone who continued (or continues) to like the show.

Dogwhistling is a rhetorical strategy where you use a code phrase like "family values" or "religious liberty" when you really mean "support of anti-gay discrimination."

Which is baffling here, because why would you need a code phrase to say that a show stinks?

I mention it in general SPN discussions to indicate my ignorance of the show at large. The first 5 seasons are a drop in the bucket at this point, after all.

I think you might be projecting a bit in terms of people using it as a measure of taste.

For what it's worth, I pick up the show again every once in a while and so far I've only found maybe one season after S5 to be regrettable overall.
