I'm sure some authors are fine with it, but a fandom, like op said, where, it's 'accepted and expected' and everybody does it all the time?

Never been in a fandom like that, and i've been in some big ones. And since OP said she's getting messages back from confused authors, it seems that it's just not something that happens across the board.

Hi, OP here, and yeah, sometimes an author would respond very briefly, not encouraging further correspondence. But more often than not, the responses I would get would be very friendly and inviting. In my experience, most authors want to talk about their fics.
