To give an example of what I mean, there’s a point where you help the military attack an isolated tribe that’s supposedly to blame for the recent disappearances. Other games might play up the ambiguity of whether they’re actually at fault. In this one, it’s clear the moment you reach the settlement that these people are completely uninvolved, the military just wants their resources, and you’re about to recognize the injustice and change sides. There are parts when this sheer earnestness actually works, but there are also parts where it feels like a bludgeon to the head.

Ah, I see! I will admit I have seen that sort of story before, so perhaps that's what some people meant by this story feeling like it borrowed from other stories. I don't agree because all stories usually share story elements, but I could imagine a person less familiar with story writing to think that.

Bleh, unsubtle stories can bite, but I'm usually forgiving if the story has a good heart. I think "unoriginality" was used as an insult too if the plot goes in a predictable direction.
