I broadly speaking agree with you, but if I can play devils advocate for a bit:

Male arousal is very clear to see when you can see the genitals. If he's flaccid it is not in keeping with the erotic vibe of the scene, and lets be honest, looks pretty pathetic.

If he's hard it would be much more... I don't know the right word... Intimate? less professional? more... exposed? I dunno. I get why people want to see that, and I agree that there's certainly a good reason to show it, but I see why the male genitals are more often hidden. Like, even female full frontal is never looking directly up her, out side of porn of course, because again that would be more whatever the word I'm looking for is. You know?

Semi-soft is probably what you aim for in scenes like that. I don't think it's unworkable.

That would work, but that's a level of bodily control I don't know how to achieve myself. A semi-on is a fleeting state for a penis imo.

Get the shot, print it, done.

True, but you see my point, much easier to hide it and get the whole scene than have to get a quick snatch of cock and have to do the rest of the scene in close ups?

TLDR Showing dick and balls are artistically much more complicated and much more effort to show than to hide.

I think that's a fair point, a penis is realistically "acting" in the scene along with the actor. I can also see how it would feel more intrusive for a guy than a woman - in the sense of unwanted erections or otherwise an outward, visible indicator of sexual arousal that's harder to control than a woman's genitals, which aren't going to visibly change on screen.

On the other hand, I don't think it's a strong enough point to justify the double-standard here, and I think it's more harmful for women to be paraded naked and upfront and not men. I would support any actor wearing fake genitals if they need a bit more privacy (socks, stick-ons, whatever prosthetic)

A flaccid penis is only awkward and silly to look at if you're not used to it. If you have seen a hundred, it's about as novel as seeing a neck or an elbow. Some are beautiful, some are special and most are average.
