This. Like, her plagiarism was crappy. But that was a long time ago. And she didn't plagiarize her published works. She isn't the devil. There are so many worse creators out there. Why does she get the most hate?

I think the argument is that without her following in fandom, she might not have become as successful as she did become, so there's a perception that she has been "rewarded" with success for her poor behavior/became successful on the backs of the authors she plagiarized and people she mistreated.

All of that is true. And she's a bad person. I just think that the amount of hate she gets is a bit disproportionate to what she's done compared to other creators who don't get as much hate for doing worse things.

I can't stand Kenyon ever since she said in an essay that Buffy emasculates the men in her life. Sexism honestly bugs me way more than plagiarism. And from reading it, I can't tell if that is actual plagiarism. A lot of authors sue each other for "stealing ideas." Sometimes it is true, sometimes it isn't. Clare's done it before, so we know she's capable. But I'd have to know more details to know if she did in this specific case, and I'd rather wait for the courts decision since they'll hear all the evidence.

Some of it was that she was a 34-year-old woman picking on young teenagers. Some of it was her pack of fandom attack dogs that she'd send to bully and harass the people she didn't like. Some of it is that her published fiction probably wouldn't have gained much traction if not for how popular she already was because of her highly plagiarized fanfiction. Mostly, it's that no matter how awful some other creator's behavior might be, even the parts of fandom that condemns them are doing it from a remove. It's more personal when it's Cassie Claire, because she went out of her way to ensure it was personal.

Yes she did plagiarize her published works. She took what she stole for her fan fiction reworked it just enough to get by. But if you had read her FF you could tell same shit just different names. She is a hack.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-15 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
She also scammed people and had a lawyer friend attack people for daring to criticize her.

But oh, it was a ~long time ago~.

FFS.

Oh for goodness sake. I'm not defending her. She's horrible. All I'm saying is that some of the reactions seem a bit extreme to me and that there are worse things. I agree that she's awful and has done awful things.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-15 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, so you're just concern trolling. Cool.

? I don't think so. I was just reacting to a couple of the comments here. I just don't get the strength of the loathing here. I just don't personally think the things she did reach quite that level of loathing. It just confuses me a bit.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-15 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I get that you think profiting off plagiarism is small potatoes, but if you really don't think a middle-aged woman who has run multiple targeted bullying campaigns, doxed teenagers and repeatedly encouraged her friends and fans to do the same in her name is loathsome I can't help you. Just chalk it up as one of life's little mysteries.

However, repeatedly popping up to question why people are getting so upset about this when there are worse people in the world is literally what concern trolling is. FYI.

Have to agree with you. I read the whole wank before too much disappeared, and CC really is as loathsome a person you can run into in fandom without her being a criminal. There's still plenty of it to be found on Fanlore living on in screenshots if anyone is interested in rooting around in that dumpster. She's awful, which is why I've never purchased any of her books or other media.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-15 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT, or any of the anons in this thread, but FS is an old enough crowd that some of the people who CC had her friends attack or witnessed her other nastiness in real time might be hanging around. So for them it really is personal. There are creators who’ve done worse shit, but CC was a big fucking deal in a fucking enormous fandom, and so her bullshit splattered a lot of people in a way most fan creators would be hard-pressed to equal.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-15 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was because she had a habit of doxxing anyone who pointed out her plagiarism? I remember a blow-up where she called someone's college and tried to get them expelled.

Yup. There was a lot of stuff. She's a bad person. I just find some of the reactions here rather intense in a way I don't quite understand.

Okay, now I know you're a troll, because doxxing is beyond heinous. *Blocking*

If you're genuinely trying to understand why she's an evergreen source of irritation, frustration, and schadenfreude in fandom circles, try examining it from a different angle. Why isn't this stuff discussed in any other circles? That's weird, right? Creative types love to gossip. And generally once someone is successful enough to be signing TV and movie development deals, it's inevitable that any weird drama or baggage from their past will catch up with them quite abruptly.

Everyone in fandom knows that you have to keep your real identity separate from the one you use to post, say, Ron/Ginny incest fanfic, and most of us aren't insane enough to dox anyone who leaves us negative feedback and try to get the person expelled from their university – but in a universe where that isn't quite so singularly weird and awful, a pseudonym is handy for that, too!

I think to a lot of people, it's just incredibly galling that CC got the best of both worlds – her "original" YA novels shot up the bestseller lists because she tied them to her fandom persona, and yet somehow she's been able to completely avoid any consequences that should rightfully stem from such a careless choice. But anyone who's read up on the situation knows that recurring themes with CC have always been 1) strategic networking with influential or particularly skilled people, so she can have them step in and fight her battles whenever trouble starts brewing, and 2) shockingly cutthroat bullying and silencing tactics, which are also strategically deployed.

In light of all of that, I think it's pretty understandable why people in fandom have decided to keep this story alive, and why the wells of resentment and bitterness run so phenomenally deep.

It's hard to feel anything but loathing when you saw first hand the damage she did. She hurt people I cared about because she is a bad person.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-15 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
She flashed her tits at Rupert Grint when Rupert was fourteen, making her a predator. Her friends thought it was hilarious and posted it on LJ. Truly, it was a different age.

She took donations from her fans, including underage fans who stole their parents' credit cards to donate to her.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-15 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, that was gross. Both encouraging kids to steal from their parents and flashing her 30-year-old tits at a child. But I’m sure philstar will be back soon to scratch her head and wonder why everyone has it out for Cassie when other people are actual murderers.

Oh wow, ew. I had not heard the first one before. That's gross.
