But, if Disney agrees with you, why did they make Rey not a Skywalker?

RJ made her not a Skywalker because the whole movie was about subverting expectations, not about what's best for the franchise or even the sequel trilogy and its characters. And Disney's ultimate end for the trilogy is to kill off the OT characters to make way for their own. They are only making it a Skywalker trilogy because of what came before but they're all too happy to get rid of the old. Doesn't mean it's right. Just that they recognize that's what the trilogy should be about.

Obviously, my opinions, since you seem to have trouble with that.

So basically, if I understand, Disney simultaneously wants to get rid of the OT Skywalker & Friends Crew, but also know that the Star Wars saga films have to be about the Skywalkers, so they're making a trilogy of films just to get rid of them? And so Rian Johnson made Rey a non-Skywalker just to subvert expectations within TLJ as a film, and Disney went along with it because it allows them to get closer to their goal of replacing Skywalker characters with their own characters?

I know you're trying to make fun of me but I do think this is basically it. Disney is not being consistent. They did not have a plan for what these films were going to be. They knew to get Star Wars back up and running, they needed to appeal to nostalgia so they had to go back to the Skywalkers and OT but they wanted to get away from that to have complete freedom. They introduce new characters at the same time they kill off the old ones in the hopes people will like the new ones and be okay with future stories not being about the Skywalkers.

But they've been very reactionary. People thought TFA was too like ANH so Disney let RJ shake things up. I don't think Rey was intended to be nobody initially. I could buy they didn't know what to do with her and JJ was just kicking the can but I do think it's solely RJ who made her a nobody since he's the one who keeps going on and on about how revolutionary this is. And I'm sure their next step won't make any more sense than what they've done already.

I wasn't really trying to make fun of you - I tried to keep the language relatively neutral, at least.

But, I mean, yes, I do think it's a pretty convoluted explanation to try to reconcile the fact that Disney made a movie that was about the Skywalkers and also some other people with your belief that the movies should only be about the Skywalkers. And I don't think it has a ton of evidence beyond your personal saltiness. I think a simpler explanation would be that Disney wants to make movies that continue the original trilogy but also doesn't view the saga as being exclusively about the Skywalkers, the way that you do.

I do absolutely believe that Disney is flying by the seat of their pants. What they want one minute, they decide they don't the next. The films we've gotten and their decision behind the scenes bear that out for me.

Regardless of what Disney thinks, I want the saga trilogy to be about the Skywalkers. Rey Random wouldn't bother me if it wasn't clear that they are getting rid of the Skywalkers and everything OT to make way for her. If she wasn't replacing them, I wouldn't care who she was related to.

I mean... I kind of feel like the main reason they're trying to move on from the OT characters is because the actors who play them are all old and infirm now (to varying degrees). We already lost one of the Big 3.

I don't really think they're doing it so they can clear the stage for Rey.

I don't disagree. But they could've done it with more class and care instead of just killing them all off and undoing everything they did in the galaxy.

I don't actually hate the new characters. I like Rey. But I want her to be part of the story that's already been told. She has no connection to the OT or PT or anything else. I agree with the anon below. She barely knows the OT people. It's not like Poe, who has come up under Leia's leadership. I am completely comfortable with him stepping up to take over Leia's role because he has spent time knowing her and learning from her. But Poe is a relatively minor character. He's not the one we're following. Rey spent two days with Luke and Han. Even if she spends time with Leia, we're not going to see it on screen. That's not satisfying at all. If Rey were actually related to someone else, she would have an incentive to explore that connection, which would bring back the OT or PT element she's connected to. Right now, the movie says she's looking forward so there's no reason for her to do that.
