Favorite endings?
(Anonymous) 2018-02-18 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)Do you prefer to see everything wrapped up neatly or do you like some things left open to interpretation?

To give an example of what did work for me, I once read a story where physicists accidentally discover how to generate a field that makes gunpowder combust. The story follows how society reacts to the discovery, and what good and bad things happen when guns are effectively eliminated as a weapon. The story ends with the same research revealing a targeted assassination method against an individual’s DNA, with the open question being whether and how this knowledge can be managed. To me, that’s a good setup for a future equation, illuminated by the events that came before and the lessons that came from trying to control another dangerous technology.

I thought the finale for The Wire was amazingly bittersweet.
The good ending for Bioshock was fantastic. It is all u wanted for the characters.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-18 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)However, for serial stuff, I'd actually like status quo. For instance, if I'm watching a police procedural, I don't want the ending to be a wedding with the main will-they/won't-they pairing (like CSI). I want them to end with defeating a big bad and it looking like they are going to continue on as they were for the rest of the show. I actually want the finale to be another episode of the show, not a very special episode that has nothing to do with why I was watching in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-18 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)MASH was good, very sentimental.
I like the way The Terminator ended. But I'm also a big sucker for the everybody is happy and dancing endings (Dirty Dancing, Footloose, Flashdance, Strictly Ballroom, etc.).
I like either wrapped up neatly or open (with hope) as long as it's done well. I do not usually appreciate the everybody's dead or doomed endings, though I will admit that sometimes it's really the only way some stories can end and stay true to themselves.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-19 04:29 am (UTC)(link)Plus, I guess I feel like ambiguous endings tend to linger with you a little more? At least they do with me. There's more to think about and unpack, I guess.
Re: Favorite endings?
More recently, I loved the ending of The Shape of Water (and I shall say no more).

I have a soft spot for the trippy "fuck you studio" psychadelia of The Prisoner.
