Favorite endings?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-18 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
What are your favorite endings and final episodes?

Do you prefer to see everything wrapped up neatly or do you like some things left open to interpretation?

I have to say, just in general, I'm a sucker for the old horror movie thing where the villain's body disappears right at the end of the movie after you think they've been defeated.

I tend to approach fiction in a deterministic, mathematical style: these are the constants, these are the variables, and these are how they add and subtract from each other. By the time I reach the ending, I want to know what happened, why, and what the outcome was. I’m not fond of open questions, unless the question sets up another equation in the setting’s future.

To give an example of what did work for me, I once read a story where physicists accidentally discover how to generate a field that makes gunpowder combust. The story follows how society reacts to the discovery, and what good and bad things happen when guns are effectively eliminated as a weapon. The story ends with the same research revealing a targeted assassination method against an individual’s DNA, with the open question being whether and how this knowledge can be managed. To me, that’s a good setup for a future equation, illuminated by the events that came before and the lessons that came from trying to control another dangerous technology.

The finale for Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood was the best. Just beautiful.

I thought the finale for The Wire was amazingly bittersweet.

The good ending for Bioshock was fantastic. It is all u wanted for the characters.

The finale for Brotherhood was so satisfying. I'm smiling just thinking about it.

It depends on the property. For horror or fantasy or anything with a contained story, I want a HEA. I want the bad guy clearly and thoroughly defeated and the characters going on with their lives, which look to be great.

However, for serial stuff, I'd actually like status quo. For instance, if I'm watching a police procedural, I don't want the ending to be a wedding with the main will-they/won't-they pairing (like CSI). I want them to end with defeating a big bad and it looking like they are going to continue on as they were for the rest of the show. I actually want the finale to be another episode of the show, not a very special episode that has nothing to do with why I was watching in the first place.

Newhart was one of my favorites - surprising and hilarious.
MASH was good, very sentimental.

I like the way The Terminator ended. But I'm also a big sucker for the everybody is happy and dancing endings (Dirty Dancing, Footloose, Flashdance, Strictly Ballroom, etc.).

I like either wrapped up neatly or open (with hope) as long as it's done well. I do not usually appreciate the everybody's dead or doomed endings, though I will admit that sometimes it's really the only way some stories can end and stay true to themselves.

I loooooooove ambiguous endings. Love 'em.

I'm the reverse. I haaaaaate endings where I'm left without an explanation for what happened.

Yeah, I get that. And honestly I know it's often kind of a gimmick to have an ambiguous ending. But it doesn't matter, it almost always makes me go all "woaaaaaaah" and be all impressed by it, no matter how ambiguous it is.

Plus, I guess I feel like ambiguous endings tend to linger with you a little more? At least they do with me. There's more to think about and unpack, I guess.

I love, love, LOVE the ending of Buffy. (Season 7 haters can go fart in a paper bag.)

More recently, I loved the ending of The Shape of Water (and I shall say no more).

Yeah, the finale of Buffy hit all the right notes for me for the most part.

I think Season 7 of Buffy had a very good first episode and a very good last episode, and the middle of the season was a bit poorly paced. Which was sadly kind of normal for BtVS.

Shape of Water was good.

Somebody below kind of stole my original answer (Buffy), so I'll go with #2 which is "All Good Things" the TNG finale. That is how to send a Star Trek series out in style, IMO.

Also, Babylon 5.

I like things left a little open. SOME resolution is good, of course. But I don't want everything too neatly resolved or completed because it feels more like a definite ending. I like to imagine that the characters' lives go on even if I can't see what happens, you know?

The end of Watchmen, specifically the bit with Doctor Manhattan telling Ozymandias "nothing ever ends" and then the bit with the journal. Just great, classic stuff.

Lately? Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Halloween heist episodes.

I have a soft spot for the trippy "fuck you studio" psychadelia of The Prisoner.
