(Anonymous) 2018-02-18 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)I feel all of the fight scenes in TLJ were bad. There was nothing that really explored the characters through the fight. With fight scenes like Vader/Anakin vs Obi-Wan, even the very first one, there was so much character exploration in those fights. Luke vs Vader are wonderful character pieces that show Luke growing right before our eyes. There was nothing in the throne scene. During the fight itself, Rey and Kylo were together but not really fighting as a unit, not to the extent that it was a character beat. I didn't feel that this was a culmination of something. It wasn't until Kylo asked her to stay (after the fight) that there was any tension. Their opponents were faceless people who said nothing so it's no different than fighting droids. Plus, it wasn't entertaining. The fight between Kylo and Luke was anti-climatic because they don't really do anything to explore what went wrong between them and I just felt that so much. Luke doesn't try to explain himself. Kylo doesn't say his side of things. It's just a waste of potential.
TFA wasn't really a fight in my eyes. She's basically trying to run away and he's not really giving his all. There's more interesting character development in it but it's not a very interesting fight.
It's nothing like Maul and Obi-Wan. The mirroring in the fight itself where Obi-Wan initially takes the stance he took in the Clone Wars - a fighting style he learned in response to his master's death - and then he goes back to the stance his master used to fight Maul and lost. Maul uses the same stance he used back then, showing that he never learned while Obi-Wan did, which reflects how Maul never learned to overcome his Sith upbringing but Obi-Wan transcended his anger and understands Maul now. It's an amazing use of fighting to show the characters.
Plus, it's so awesome to see Obi-Wan as such a badass. Having seen all their other fights, to see that Obi-Wan can take down someone like Maul in three strikes is a true master of the art and I loved it. I loved everything about it.
