I agree with you. It makes me feel weird, because there's my feeling when Hispanic folks didn't use to be on TV that much: "so hey Hispanic folks are still fairly underrepresented, but at least public opinion seems to positive all around. Haven't seen any stereotypes!"

...And then there's my feeling whenever a Hispanic character is present, but badly stereotyped: "Good molly oh golly, a male who is violent and a womanizer, and a female who is feisty/passionate with their body. I suddenly want to die than continue watching this embarrassing show. I hope no one seriously seriously believes these fictional stereotypes that some out-of-touch writers who haven't interacted at all with ordinary people in the last three decades are real. ...Hahaha, who am I kidding, people are terrible."

I will leave behind one positive/believable portrayal of a Hispanic person I saw in a movie recently, and it's in Cars 3 of all things. Just an ordinary character with their own character-development and stuff, with no attempt to make them out as exotic or different than any other character. The only way you'd know they were Hispanic was because of their name.

No. No one is actually watching this show and thinking these things. They are not seeing this.

You are seeing this because you're sensitive to it. Everyone else is seeing a good character.

what are you talking about?

Are you talking about the show Altered Carbon, or in general? I wasn't talking about AC, I was talking in general and a lot of groan-worthy characters I saw written many times before.

I'm talking about Altered Carbon.

Er, no. There's the OP, for starters. And not everyone thinks Ortega is a good character, because that's like, statistically impossible. You're never going to get complete agreement that ANY character is a good one, never mind one that rather neatly slots into a common stereotype about Latinas.

Oh gosh wow we better instead decide that she's TERRIBLE because GOD FORBID LATINAS BE ACTUAL FUCKING PEOPLE
