Gah, yeah. Especially in fandoms which are based around actual works of literature.

I've been involved in a fannish argument (a book fandom) for most of the afternoon and my opponent, realizing how thoroughly beaten s/he was, tried to discredit me with the whole "well, you're just reading too much into it and have no life" argument, which is one of the most irritating cop-outs in the world. Let's just say this secret struck a big chord with me. :-D

Yeah, I've been there!! I mean, god forbid you actually quote something from the book in a debate. That's so unfair on the people who haven't bothered reading it (in fandoms of something based on an original novel).

As I'm sure you know (given your icon), the real fun kicks off when you start quoting the book to shore up your arguments that the film (ostensibly based on the same source material) could have done a better job with some things.

I really do love LOTR (books and films), but I got into some major arguments over the cinematic version of TTT...LOL

Oh god, that film. You're not even allowed to criticize it by comparing it to the stage version, but no, dear god, mention the book?

Or saying that an Angel of Music should have a good singing voice, that's definitely not allowed either.
