On the other hand, I hate the fact that western series/shows/MOVIES have a different plot every single time. Movies always seem underdeveloped to me (like, WTF, they should have taken more time to explore that relationship/figure out the puzzle/how anticlimactic that they could finish their mission after only getting shot at three times by bad guys whose organization is about to be CRUSHED) because they rush the plot so much to get it to fit into ninety minutes. The fact that TV shows jump from plot to plot to plot without any cohesive overall mission (well, there's a slight one that gets maybe ten minutes an episode) annoys me too.

I hate that too. I prefer one long, intricate plot myself, and many TV shows do have this. But american cartoons usually do not... and it's horrid >.> I was so shocked that Avatar did that I still can't believe it isn't anime sometimes.

Not much of a cartoon person myself, because American cartoons tend towards crude humor or kids shows (or maybe I'm looking in the wrong places/haven't tried in too long), but most shows are definitely like that. Especially with new seasons, when they just spew out a totally different plot. =|

Exactly, I was comparing anime to our cartoons up here. Avatar is the one exception I've found in the past 10 years or more xD

As for shows, I know what you mean. I loved Veronica Mars because they kept continuity in the plot, but apparently viewers couldn't handle it so the plot lines became shorter and shorter, then it got cancelled. Lame =/

...Really. Continuity in Veroncia Mars? I love that show, but I kind of have to disagree. The second season seemed pretty much disconnected from the first and the third was just thrown together like WHOAH. Even the parts that carried over from the first season to the second season seemed like they just pulled them out of random and were trying to force tired plot lines.

I still wish we could have a season four, though. :'( The FBI plot seemed on the verge of brilliance.

I know Reboot went into a plot arc after a season or two of being episodic. I haven't seen it since I was eight, but I remember going, "OMG IT'S LIKE AN ONGOING STORY ZOMG" and loving it to pieces.

Can't think of another one, though. :/ I think the X-men cartoon did it at least some?

I totally agree with you on movies. Movies really aren't doing it for me anymore, and I think it largely has to do with the fact that short-form storytelling isn't doing for me anymore either. I like TV shows and anime with overarching plot. Even if there is sometimes some divergence from the main plot, I still really enjoy it when a story takes awhile to tell -- better character development, more intricate story elements, etc...

There are certain TV shows that I still like that are totally episodic, like CSI or Numb3rs or whatever, but these are, for me, exceptions rather than the rule.

I think it depends on the series, both in Western and anime cases--they're not all one way or another. Lost, for example, is one giant plot throughout all the seasons. Something like House generally does single plots episode to episode and the manga Wild Adapter deals with subplots that get wrapped up each volume, with a larger general plot that ties it all up. All are brilliant; it's just a different method of storytelling and if they're done right, one is not better than the other.

I do agree, however, that something like CSI that's like one mission after another without a lot of development or focus on the characters annoys me, too, and is what made me stop watching. :/
