Hirano admitted he made her out his fetishes. She's pure wank-dream for him. That's the depth of her character. looking at her, she has little beyond being "moe". Her battles with Alucard are the most embarrassing ones in Hellsing, IMO. Dawn 6 was crack but I think Hirano got in clear how weak her character was to humiliate her in that episode she's easily defeated by Alucard's Coffin.

Her fight as contrast with others one-shot opponents was very lame. All she did was shoot a little, cry a lot, get ONE badass moment, then proceed to be raped and eaten SLOWLY. Even Luke Valentine (whom I believe is far weaker character than Rip, btw) got a little more of action before breaking down.

She's not bad per se, but she's a disappointment to live up the fanon hype.

The clock and umbrella don't count? Seras' breasts don't expand in the Manga. I find her chest smaller now than it was in the first volumes, actually. Same with Integra's (who in her original design sheet? Had bigger boobs than Seras). That's Hirano's style changing as opposed to the character's personal quirks.

I suppose you're right in the technical aspect, but there's just something about her that draws people in. I dunno. I play Rip in a RP (which might just be why she's so close to my heart), and I've had people who are not into Hellsing comment on what a unique character she is. She doesn't seem overly "moe", in fact, she seems to be confused for a male most of the time. I do admit to being a little disappointed with her death. However, I'm glad we did get to see what we did of her.

The clock and the umbrella are actually what puts her over the top. She's a vampire, but completely atypical from the ones that had been presented up to that point. Sure, she's no Integra or Seras, but she was never meant to be. Plus, her actual story is a great nerd moment for those of us who like German culture/opera.

TL;DR version, different strokes for different folks.

I understand personal attachment. I don't dislike Rip, but I dislike the fanon hype (fanon as opposed as canon) she has. Back in the day of the Hellsing fandom, there were a LOT of crazy theories of how Rip was the center of everything, etc, etc. They sort of killed my enjoyment for the character as a good diversion side one. Captain got the same issue recently (a year ago). I think now her fan-role is far more acceptable.

I like aspects of her quirkiness and design but her role in Hellsing was fairly weak compared to the other female characters. Even Heinkel and Yumie got a better deal and they were more side characters than her.

I guess that people who didn't get into Hellsing remember her as that: she's moe. Her design is very attractive. Androgynity IS moe in Hellsing. ;) So being confused by males don't stop people. Hirano made her moe on purpose: fetishes sum and all that. I don't think she's so unique, she seems very typical girl character aside of her wearing a suit & opera fixation: cutesy, submissive, easy to break. Even her clock and umbrella were reflection of this. That's a contrast with other Hellsing females who aren't typical anime!girls. Seras may have a "girly" design (though her Manga one is tomboyist at best with or without that miniskirt. I dislike all her animated redemptions myself), but her development and role as Alucard's heir would have been filled typically as a boy.

Yes. Exactly.

Are they still around and findable somewhere? You know, I think I might be in the mood to hear how Rip is the center of everything. Erm.

I don't know if any of those threads survived in BK forum (because old stuff was deleted). It happened mostly in forums that are no longer here. :/ I don't remember if there was one in [livejournal.com profile] hellsing.

Pretty much, it was a popular fanon that Rip wasn't one of Dok's fail vampire experiments, but the Shi/her/the original vampire Millennium used despite her very unsuccessful battle with Alucard?

Of course, Hirano crashed their wet dreams by showing Rip in Dawn. There was much wank from their side and lulz from mine. >>;

Ah, thank you. Will go looking there, me being new to Hellsing and all.

O_o I noticed that there are discussions on her being a true vampire vs. being one of Dok's, okay, but that is one I don't get. At all. I mean, I adore her, but that she's simply not on the level Alucard is/someone has to be to be considered the terrifying beginning of the end-or-whatever-they-called-her-I-forgot... well, that was pretty obvious, wasn't it?

...Killing her off as just another one Alucard could eat though was wasted potential. I so wished sometimes Alucard on a killing and eating spree was not the center of it all. And the Fandom is disappointing, because I keep looking for it and found not one AU-Rip-survives-somehow-fanfic yet.

And Dawn is so much crack, that I nearly couldn't read it. Slapstick like woah for most of it. wtf.

Not to her rabid fans. The Rip wank was pretty epic from Shi!1!1! to complains about her pink shirt in the OVA means leaving the fandom 4va!! (I'm not an OVA fan, but Christ, don't like the pink shirt? Get Manga!Rip who has a white one in colored pages).

...I wasn't much of an Alucard fan until volume 8 to be honest. I was all for Integra, Seras and Pip myself. Anderson to a lesser degree. To only battles I enjoy were the ones featuring Seras&Pip. Integra's my favorite character, but her best development isn't in great battles.

There are plenty Rip-survives-fics but they are bad. V. Bad.

Re: 140

[identity profile] alexis-chan.livejournal.com 2008-07-13 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't even noticed the pink shirt until I came across a wanking fan because of it. But then, I prefer Manga!Rip anyway. You know, not only did I mistake her for a man, but the German translation twisted the pronouns in a strange way, so she actually gets refered to as "he" by her soldiers all the time and just once at the end as "she" by the Major. I was so confused!

Understandable, Seras and Pip were being awesome. :) I like them both myself - which reminds me, I have to reread the manga for Pip - I didn't become aware of his existence until halfway through. Which is a shame. And aah, yes, Integra has other strong points than besides shooting enemies, hehe.

I found not even a bad one! Well. Maybe because I skipped everything that looked like badfic. I'm not that desperate. Not yet.

I prefer the Manga in everything. Though I admit I think they did a superb job with Schrödinger.

It's not only they are awesome, but their battles are interesting instead of dragging blood-fest in which Alucard eats everybody (and ironically, is defeated because of THIS). I loved the Mansion attack in volume 6, the Zorin fight in 7 and their stand against Captain. It had some degree of originality and suspense.

They must have been taken down? Or swarmed under the Mary Sue/Alucard & Alucard/Seras (though Seras is replaced by a Mary Sue in most of the stories) fics fans keep writing in ff.net atm.

OMG. Yes! She told me about you.

Re: 140

[identity profile] alexis-chan.livejournal.com 2008-07-13 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Not to forget, his cat!ear-twitching was entirely too cute.

It was a nice surprise compared to totally unbalanced, bloody, will-eat-you-anyway Alucard battles. I didn't got really into Hellsing until I saw, that there was more to it than Alucard eating random enemies. - And the Mansion attack, yes! Exactly. I don't understand why Alucard couldn't be made a bit more interesting in not making him so insanely powerful. It's mostly the same - He just has to heal himself after being shot various times, look scary and then procced to eat everybody standing near by. By now he should actually look like the Major. I kind of like him, but I never cared for him at all. *munch* There goes the Dandy! *munch* Hey, random evil soldiers! *munch* Look, a crying Rip van Winkle! - Struggling, having problems, not always winning, damn it!, that would have done him some good. Well. Can't have everything, I guess. Anyway, Seras is way better at being interesting.

Probably both, but the Mary Sues don't bother me as much as normally. Probably because I know, in the end they will just get eaten anyway, tru wuv or not.

The most interesting about Alucard before volume 8 emo-doom is that he serves Integra. At least to me. Aside of his relationship with Integra, I didn't care for him that much.

L-LOL. I assumed everybody saw him as that annoying little brother who pulls people's hair and videotapes embarrassing moments.
