See, the changing artists and writers is what gets me about western comics. I like stuff like Bone because it's consistent, but even the Sandman, as awesome as it is, drives me up the wall with the changes in artists. Yeah, some of them were great, but some of them were shit, too - the Sandman universe made it work (everyone sees Dream etc. a different way, sure) because of what it was, but seeing it with other comics drives me INSANE.

I also think that superhero comics are the bane of the western comic industry and need to die in a fire. Seriously, how many times can you re-hash the same concept? Do something NEW already. I don't understand how people can keep eating it up. Japanese comics might have their share of tropes and cliches, but at least it's not the same overbearing domination of the same characters and universes that were thought up... I don't even know how many years ago.

I like a few western comics, but I'll be the first to admit that the fact that I know little about them (outside of a few favourites) and the high cost drives me away. If I'm going to pay $25 per volume, it had better be high-quality stuff, that's all I can say. Give me a phonebook magazine or a 500 yen tankoubon over that any day of the week.

That's why I never by trade paperbacks. I would rather spend 3 dollars here and there for one issue over time after every paycheck, that's an excusable amount, and I can stand paying that. I wouldn't buy a TP unless its someone I really want to read, such as Transmetropolitan, or another of my favourites.

How many superhero comics have you read? Surprisingly, although many people say they're the bane of the Western comics existence, they are the sheer base of comic readers, and if DC and Marvel and such were to ostracize that base, they would be out of business, plain and simple. I would rather they stay in business, to be honest. Plus, there are many superheroes I've enjoyed, the short recent Namor run was enjoyable, and I loved Cable and Deadpool while it was out with a passion!

That makes sense, but wouldn't you end up spending more money overall? /not sure how that works

A mishmash here and there, most of it fairly old - my brother used to have stacks of Wolverine, and I read some of that and X-men - I've read some stuff from the public library as well, mostly Batman and again more X-men. I could honestly never grasp what was going on half the time, though, because I'd be jumping in the middle of something and never knew where you're supposed to actually start. And then I keep hearing about a reset, where everything is erased and you go back to square one again where they're just finding their powers or whatever, and what's the point agh.

I get that it's money, but again, that's the same reason I don't really like long-running shounen series like Naruto (also, they're... really formulaic >_>). It's only long because they're making money and they can milk it... it seems like it's more about cash than creativity.

Yeah, they're servicing fans, but they're also making the industry really impenetrable to outsiders. In Japan, regardless of whether someone is a 'nerd' or not, EVERYONE reads manga, just like reading the newspaper or whatever on the bus, because it's cheap, light, and available. The western comics industry lacks that accessibility.

That's one of the reasons why I've loved the prevalence of the internet, to be honest. That's a big way that I've been able to get into Western Comics, through just doing some simple reading, its easy to either catch up, or even clear up some missing holes! I started reading comics in High School for a project on American comic history, and it was actually very easy to get into! Just jumping in and starting with a new arc is always the best way to do it, I've found!

It may be more expensive in some ways, yes, but I've found that around $3 here and there is alot easier to swallow than the 10-15 of either Trade Paperbacks or Manga, although I admit I really only buy the comics I really like, such as te Star Wars ones, I buy those every month! :D

See now, that's the funny thing, its in Japan. The sad thing is that the Comic industry used to be like that, but the advent of both the Radio, Comics Code Authority, and the Television effectively killed it for the mainstream audience. There are actually alot of comics that don't fall into that category, such as the Dark Tower series, which is very popular from what I hear, but I'm not a big Stephen King fan. >>
