I feel like people who get that impression haven't read the stories at all and are going on either general pop culture knowledge or various adaptations where Watson is portrayed like a bumbling fool:

Right?! It's so frustrating that for DECADES Watson is "just there because he's good with guns" &/or he's the "bumbling fool" who exists solely to make Holmes look good. He's not stupid! He's a medical doctor, he's gotta be somewhat intelligent. He just doesn't see the world the same way Holmes does, that doesn't make him an idiot. NO ONE sees the world the way Holmes does.
