I liked it on its own terms, but it did feel kind of unrelated to the main plot of the movie.

I found it a welcome relief from the uber-plot, tbh.

I liked it too. And I loved the space horses.

It was my favourite bit.

It was just such a pointless thing to do. The critters would have been rounded up in no time at all and placed back in captivity and even if not, they probably have no idea how to survive outside of captivity. And you can bet that those little stablekids would have born the brunt of the displeasure of the animals' owners.

This was my biggest issue with this subplot. Her heart was in the right place, but bless her, her brain was not. Not helped by how the rest of the plot was very against making grand gestures without thinking through the consequences.

I loved it. It was important thematically for both Rose and Finn, and it gave us some great sequences, a cool inversion of an earlier series mainstay, and tied in with the overarching themes of trial, failure, and learning.

Plus. GIANT CREATURE ESCAPE.

It was a nice symbolic gesture, but generally speaking, freeing a bunch of animals raised in captivity leads to their inevitably horrible demise as they're picked off by predators or slowly starve to death. Freeing a bunch of animals raised in captivity while leaving the slave-children who are responsible for the stables behind to take the fall for your symbolic gesture makes it a lot less nice. But it looked cool.
