Not any of the anons in this subthread, but what the fuck is his nuanced motivation? Normally I’m all over woobifying villains I find hot, but I find him so morally repugnant, Kylo Ren makes me wish I could shove him out an airlock and use him for target practice. Why and how do people sympathise with him? I’ve seen standard woobie boilerplate about how “no one loves or understands him” in the Reylo tag, but his dad tried to welcome him back with open arms and Kylo killed him, so I can’t see how that’s not his fault. And I don’t even like Han.

I can sympathize with him as far as going to Jedi training and then attempted murder because omg the dark side is too strong in there, but everything afterwards makes that moot for me. Because mass murder and such.

He seems to be driven in large part by a need for approval/affection and feels (though we know it's incorrectly) that his family just didn't want to deal with him and all his issues, so he sought out fulfillment and support from an inadvisable source. So now he's an evil dick with immature emotional problems who fucked himself over big time and obviously it sucks for the people who suffer under his villainy but it's not a great situation for him either. The motivation itself isn't a nuanced one but it is a sad one, and I can see why some people find him nuanced and compelling because of it/want to see him redeemed.

Of course I've only watched each of the new movies once so what do I know lol.

AYRT—I’m just not seeing the “driven by the need to affection/approval” thing, I guess. Mostly all I get from his character is a kind of petulant “no one can tell me what to do and I’ll kill anyone who tries” whining.

It's a Star Wars movie. It's only as deep as you make it. If you don't want to see an interpretation, you won't. It's almost as pointless as arguing over whether or not two characters have chemistry.

Yeah, I feel like most of his issues stemmed from the fact that his parents just didn't know how to handle having a kid who was obviously strong in the Force. It's not that they didn't love him, it's that they didn't know what to do with him, and the end result was him feeling like they didn't care (even though they did) and didn't understand him (which they didn't, on a certain level). It's understandable how and why people might find that sympathetic.

Are people getting Han and Leia’s feelings on him from the novels, or did I miss something from the films? I’ve only seen each once.

My guess is they're getting it from their heads - Kylo Ren's motivations make no sense on screen*, unless you try to add some additional baggage to this, so people make shit up.

/*the whole "dark side was strong in him" thing as an explanation for anything only makes sense in terms of myths and legends, it doesn't give you much in terms of normal human psychology. There's the whole thing with Luke almost deciding to kill him, which is at least something specific which definately can be a source of bad shit for KR, but how does he get from "my uncle betrayed me" to killing all other students at school who don't want to join him, joining the reborn evil empire that kidnnaps children for its military, and ordering villages to be killed - we have nothing for that. You have to insert a lot of made-up backstory here to explain at least some of this...
