Every time I see a secret about this show, I have no idea who these people are and what the context is. Either the show has nothing to do with the book, or the book left very little impression on my memory.

Same and I'm pretty sure it's the book

I kind of think the book wasn't actually very good in retrospect, and choosing it as a target to adapt almost feels like a parody of what we consider 'prestige' in TV

Good... I tried to read it and bouncd off hard. Just couldn't get interested. Same with the show, quit watching after managed to get through three episodes. So ick so boring so I don't care about these people. I did kind of care about the AI hotel, but he wasn't enough to keep me watching.
