Should I take ballet or contemporary/modern dance class?

I want to get in shape, and I love dancing.

How old are you? I think ballet is a lot harder on older bodies, and a *lot* harder to really master or perform if you're not in pretty good shape already.

Maybe take contemporary/modern first (which will probably have a few ballet elements thrown in), and then try a ballet class. I'm no dance, but I feel like modern dance is a lot more forgiving of someone who hasn't been doing it for years and years already, and ballet just is not.

Thanks!

I'm in my mid twenties, and while I'm not /in/ shape, I'm not totally out of shape (my cardio is shit)...also I won't need to buy shoes if I do contemporary...

Ha, yeah - ballet shoes do cost a lot. Sounds like fun - enjoy!

Agreed. Ballet is also a lot more strict/structured and something like modern/contemporary will give you a little more leeway to not be perfect (ie it's less likely you'll stand out in a group/class) than in ballet.
