That seems like a stretch. It doesn't hurt them at all, it just surprises them. That being said, I'm not sure how effective it actually is or if it has long-term benefits.

I don't know if it works for cats, but you might try Bitter Apple spray on the headphones, because it could be really dangerous if kitty gets in the habit of chewing wires. Otherwise, redirect. Don't let kitty attack dad's feet, redirect with a toy. Don't let him even start playing before Dad walks away or shoos him off. He shouldn't associate feet with being a toy. Redirect with an appropriate toy.
