It's not abusive at all. Like the above anon said, it doesn't hurt them, it just startles them and they don't like it. Once they get squirted a bunch of times (how many times will honestly depend on the cat, some are stubborn and will keep on trying to do it anyway and others dislike it so much they'll stop pretty much right away), they'll learn to associate being squirted with that thing you don't want them to do and will stop doing it.

It took my cat a little under a week to learn that she's not allowed on the kitchen counters that way. I would just give her a light spritz with a mini plant mister whenever I caught her up there. It didn't hurt her, it just made her not want to be up there, which was the goal.
