166 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-07-13 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
I call myself a "recovering Resembool Ranger" because, um, I used to be one. But I got out because....well, between the fangirls, and Vic crossing the line from "this is what I think" to "I AM T3H LORD OF T3H ANIME BOW DOWN AND FOLLOW MY COMMANDS"...no, I can't call myself a hardcore fan of his anymore. Which frustrates the heck out of me. When he comes to my local con soon, I might....call him out on it. I don't know.

That being said, I kinda think the fanboying is endearing to me. I think it's cool that anyone over...25 or so is that into any sort of fandom, no matter who they are. I could be in the minority, though. As for the reused voice actors....I think it's not totally their fault? From what I know, it's very, very hard to make a living in voice acting in general, particularly how the market is right now. You've got to take on a loooot of projects to survive on it...and it can be hard to break into the business, as well. I think altogether it combines so there's just not a lot of voice actors to choose from. I'm not 100% sure about that, it's just what I've heard.

I should rephrase, I suppose. I like that a VA enjoys his job, and enjoys the anime he's apart of. I would think it adds to the performance level. And I don't mind that he's older. I have friends who are older than 25 and visibly active in fandom, and I think it's wonderful. And there are other VAs whom I like considerably more than Vic who like the things they've been a part of--Greg Ayres and Scott McNeil come to mind--and are not what I consider to be an embarrassment. Vic takes things too far, in my opinion, and it's mostly because of the self-insertion crap. (If you do choose to call him out on it, I hope you get some kind of recording; I'd love to watch that on youtube ♥)

I only found out tonight about his apparently anti-yaoi stance which... frankly, I don't care that much for yaoi myself, but it bothers me that he's apparently forcing his ideals onto other people. Even if I believe that people are reading too much into certain aspects and misunderstanding the subtleties of some of the characters, that doesn't give me a right to parade around shoving my ideals down other peoples' throats. Having not heard his words personally, I don't know if they're specifically anti-homosexual or not, but... he should be more careful about the things he's publically saying; he may be Funimation's golden-boy right now, but if he's not careful he could get himself into a lot of trouble. It seems to me, considering how pro-homosexual fandom is, he's making some serious mistakes there.

I'm sure it's not their fault--I wasn't trying to pin the blame on the voice actors themselves, there. It's the dubbing companies that I wish would do a better job there--there are things they could do, I'm sure, to make the industry more conducive to accepting new talents. That said--I kind of feel not so much pity for the struggle to do it full-time. I, and many others I know, want to have careers that are hard to make a living on solely: writing, art, you name it, and many of us have accepted the fact that sometimes, in order to do the thing you really want to do, you have to take on other work simultaneously to support yourself. You know? There's nothing to say that these voice actors couldn't find secondary work to support themselves, and maybe, with the state of the anime industry in general, it would be advisable to consider doing so anyway.
