I am not Japanese. But I read manga in Japanese and frequently watch anime and Japanese TV shows without subs OR dubs. And when I laugh at bad translations, it's because I do in fact know what they really said. (Protip: Masi Oka wrote his own Japanese dialogue in the first season of Heroes, and it's much funnier than the subtitles on screen, which convey the gist of what he said, but not the nuances.) I am not as good a speaker as I was ten years ago, but that's because I don't use it very much any more. I used to be pretty good, because the subs and dubs did not exist when I became a fan as a teenager, and because I had correspondences going with some folks in Japan.

I actually used to wonder why the body language/voice matchups bothered me so much, and then a guy I was dating, who was born in Nagoya, and did not speak English until he came here in his twenties, pointed out to me the mismatch between the body language and the tone of voice/attitudes the drawn character and English language voice actor were using, which he said in several instances was so bad it gave him a headache. Hiroshi was not particularly into anime though. He used to think it was cute and amusing that I watched TV shows like that--he preferred American TV and music.

Frequently translations are "localised" and they are quite often "cleaned up", particularly in shows intended for children. Or they decide to translate the "sense" of something rather than literally what was said, which can sometimes be a good choice if it's an idiom that wouldn't make sense outside of the culture, but is sometimes just laughable. Then there was the print translation of Sailor Moon in the late 90s that translated what was rather clear and elegant Japanese language (that series was the first thing I ever read in Japanese, because I liked it long before it was ever translated and followed along in Nakayoshi magazine from 1993-1995, with a dictionary in one hand and the comic in the other) into rap-speak.

I don't like dubs. I've never seen Ouran, and wasn't speaking about it specifically. I haven't really been into anime for a while. I got sucked into HP fandom and ended up going from that into SPN and Heroes. I keep meaning to check it out again, but I actually got my start with it as a Captain Harlock fan in about 1980 or so...

Try translated something from a raw anime into English and try to match lipflap and timing when said in English. Sometimes everything can't be said because it would look weird if the lipflap didn't match or they stopped talking when the character's mouth kept moving or kept talking when the character stopped. That would be very weird.

Yes, in shows for children, dialogue is cleaned up... especially anime from the early to mid-90's or anything by 4Kids. But that was then and this is now. Naruto is pretty much unedited except for sprays of blood.

You have no reason to dislike dubs... afterall, squeaky voices aren't easy on the ears and even the Japanese fans end up liking the dub instead of the original Japanese version, plus, voice acting for anime has improved tremendously.

I have lots of reasons, you just don't think they're good enough. Whatever.

More importantly, why should I BOTHER with dubs? I don't exactly need them.

I don't know what squeaky voices you're talking about, but I find Japanese voices speaking Japanese to be perfectly pleasant, except for a few that probably wouldn't sound pleasant no matter what they were speaking.

...wait, are you actually trying to sell me on the idea that dubs are BETTER than the original? @_@;;;

Whatever.

They can be.
