I went to a Japanese restaurant with a friend of a friend, and she kept complaining that they didn't have Chinese food. To the waiter. I just about died.

Haha, that's mortifying, I'm so sorry. Did she ever get straightened out on the mix up?

Got some Mexican takeout. We ordered 4 meals that should have tortillas PLUS extra tortillas. They only gave us one pack (3 small ones) of tortillas for all four meals.

this waiter was very snotty to me and acted like he totally resented my being there. I asked him for mustard for my pastrami sandwich and he slammed the jar down on the table. I had to go to the bathroom halfway through my lunch and when I came back not only was my food gone but there were two other people sitting at my table. (This was at a restaurant that I used to eat at all the time and normally the service was great.)

The Pan-Asian restaurant just around the block from me (walking distance even) may possibly be the worst restaurant I've ever eaten at. And it used to be good, but the owners changed a couple years back. Now it is basically inedible. Honestly not sure how they are still in business.

Honestly, I think things like this happen because a significant majority of people have a shit palate and don't realize it - nor would they admit it even if you could prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. Very few people are comfortable thinking that they're the kind of person who can't tell the difference between vienna sausages and prime rib, everyone wants to believe their taste is good and discriminating.

The other factor is that people go places for reasons other than the food. Some people like chain restaurants because they may not be amazing, but they're consistent. Or they go to a place because it's clean. Or because they like the decor and atmosphere. Or because it's kinda sorta ethnic food without the burden of being around actual brown people.

Ugh, this is so irritating that it still makes me mad and I've never gone back to the restaurant even though the food was all right. A new fusion Chinese/Japanese place opened up in my hometown and I decided to try it with some friends. We ordered a few sushi rolls as an appetizer. Or more accurately, *I* ordered them, because I was the only one who was familiar with sushi.

When the food arrived, instead of XY, we got an Y roll. I flagged down the waiter and explained the error, expecting him to apologize and bring the right roll. Mix-ups happen, it's no big deal, but the fault wasn't mine. Instead, he INSISTED that this is what I'd ordered. I fucking knew it wasn't, but I wasn't rude about it, just shook my head and smiled and said no, we'd definitely ordered XY. He KEPT INSISTING we'd ordered Y, even after I grabbed a blank sushi menu and pointed out that there wasn't even an option for Y roll, only XY roll, so how could I have ordered a Y roll?

Nope, he kept talking louder and louder claiming that *I* had messed up somehow and I eventually gave up. I didn't stiff him on the tip (though he only got 20% instead of the 25%+ I usually give) or complain to the manager, but to this day I think jesus, what an asshole.

I don't think you should have tipped him

This. I know waitstaff make a lot of their money in tips, but when they are rude like that, and saying basically the customer is wrong, when in this instance the op was absolutely right, then no, a tip shouldn't be given.
